Advice from BIB please!
Discussion
I've found out that Sussex has an Assessment Day which includes everything bar the medical. I'm keen to know if anyone has recently taken part/been involved in recruitment, as the tasks involved seem to change frequently. I know the fitness side has altered (assault course and push/pull tests minimum 35kg) but what about the Carosel (is it still called that?) where you have a series of 5 minute roleplays? Numeracy/literacy tests I could do in my sleep, what else can I expect and how difficult is it? I know I can speak to Sussex about these, but I'll get a running order at best - I'd like personal experience/opinions from the PH BIB please!
Thanks
Julian

Julian.
Off the top of my head;
Read up on current affairs...(everything and anything)...
Have opinions on;
1) Anti-social behaviour and how to tackle it
2) Racism
3) Sexism
4) Homophobia
5) Speed Cameras (true, they might ask you this one)
6) What ambitions you have in the police
7) Life experiences relevant to being a police officer.
You must be open minded, flexible, willing to listen to others and take on their ideas and opinions. Remain impartial and be in possession of as many of the facts as possible before making decisions.
Be none specific in your speech. ie: police officer (not man or woman), Chairperson, Staffing levels (not manpower), etc etc
Whether you agree with the above or not, that is what you need to be coming across as if you want a career in the cops. If not...then look at a 9-5 job, doing the same thing day in, day out (sorry, sound like a recruiting advert)
Oh and don't tell them you've ever looked at:

Not a bib but, local issues? would they come up. ie the bonfire celebrations in Lewes?
maybe talking twaddle but for most interviews if you can link the questions to a local issue it may show you are keen on working in that area/position.
good luck.
BIG ISSUE!
New legislation to control the anti social use of fireworks and use of fireworks by those under 18 years.
Learn about it as it is topical at the moment!.
Learn about the National Policing objectives over the next 3 years. (from Home office)
Reduce crime by 15% overall and increase PCSO by 20,000!

I have an acquaintance who is a probationer in the Sussex Force, I will see if I can catch up with him and make some enquiries for you.
I’m also working alongside some of Sussex’s finest at the end of the week/weekend and will endeavour to ask some questions![]()
That would be excellent, thanks!
Thanks also Gone and SuperlightR, I'm putting together a list of possible topics that might arise.
From the days when I was a recruit assessor...
You need to try and structure your answers if there is an interview; think "STAR":
S cene - set the scene.
T ask - what did you have to do, or were trying to achieve?
A ction - how did you go about doing the task?
R esult - what was the outcome of your action?
You need to be able to evidence each answer - it is no good saying things like "I am good at..." or "my boss says I do well at..."
Here's an example, showing leadership and equal opportunities awareness:
At an incident of street robbery, suspects had been seen nearby. I located the offenders, and then heard colleagues describing them as "coloured" and "half caste" (scene). I was aware that these descriptions were inapprporiate and could cause offence, and so decided to speak with colleagues later (task). I advised them that this type of language was exclusionary, and could lead to complaints and/or disciplinary proceedings (action). My colleagues were unaware that these terms were exclusionary, but having been made aware that they are, would not use them in future, and avoid causing offence (result).
Have a look at recruiting portions from various forces, and the national generic pages. You will find the areas that are assessed (to tell you exactly what they are would make it too easy for you...
)
Hope that helps
