Anyone near Portsmouth know how to remove a speed limiter ?
Discussion
Hi, and apologies if this has been answered (I couldn't fine one).
I've just bought an ex- British Gas 2009 VW Caddy 2.0 SDI and am trying to find information about removing the speed limiter these were fitted with. I'm not technical on vehicles, so ideally is there anyone on the south coast who would be able to do this for me ? or if not point me in the right direction ?
Many Thanks,
Dave.

These company policy limits really get on my tits.
Dear Mr British Gas, when one of your drivers makes a mistake coming the other way on my side of the road, I want him to be able to accelerate out of trouble before he hits me, exceeding the speed limit if necessary.
I assume BRAKE has been pestering you. Please get a grip and stop being a PC tit.

Just bought a Ford Connect with a speed limit set at 70. Having the limiter removed tomorrow. Also maybe a tune.
I'm near Petersfield. A mobile man is coming out to me from Hayling Island. £25 call out.
He's with me tomorrow morning. If all well, I can tell you his details.
Didn't buy your car from Waterlooville did you?

Frankly then the limiter should be lower so when he hits you he does less damage.Dear Mr British Gas, when one of your drivers makes a mistake coming the other way on my side of the road, I want him to be able to accelerate out of trouble before he hits me, exceeding the speed limit if necessary.

How much acceleration has a caddy got at 70mph? If he's got it wrong overtaking a 60mph vehicle, how much difference is it going to make at 71, 72, 73 mph? Maybe knowing there is a limiter would encourage him to slam on the anchors and abort rather than hanging on in there? Thanks Gingerbread Man - if it works out, please let me have his details - cheers. Van came from a dealer in Southampton - I'm guessing straight from an auction.I'm near Petersfield. A mobile man is coming out to me from Hayling Island. £25 call out.

Right, then, let's have another go.
Dear Mr British Gas, please remove speed limiters from your vans. I don't want to find myself approaching one of your drivers as he goes for an overtake and runs out of breath because he forgot the about the limiter.

Never realised they did a non-turbo version of the VAG 2.0 diesel engine. The SDI has less than half the TDI's 140PS and if BG limited theirs' just how much of the 88mph are you missing? Also, it seems the fuel economy isn't any better (according to the one review I read), which surprised me as I thought economy was the reason the SDI existed, presumably the appeal is a simpler engine and lower purchase price. So, did you want the SDI or was it what was available.
The 2.0 SDI is rare as hell and I believe it's only the Caddy and the Golf which ever had it. Quite why you would want that little power in a work van is beyond me, especially as you say the fuel economy is not much better than the 2.0 TDI which has over twice as much power.
I agree that company vehicles don't need outrageous engines but there gets to a point when having too little power surely makes the vehicle unsafe. If I was driving round a fully loaded van weighing 2 tonnes or so I would certainly want much more than 68bhp.

Very little to do with BRAKE, and has everything to do with increased fuel costs limiting the dividend they can pay to their share holders.Dear Mr British Gas, when one of your drivers makes a mistake coming the other way on my side of the road, I want him to be able to accelerate out of trouble before he hits me, exceeding the speed limit if necessary.

Limiter = less fuel used = bigger bonus for the CEO.

I have the 2.0TDI in an Octavia. The Octavia is paid for so it's not going anywhere but as all I actually use it for is plowing up and down the M3 I have often wondered if it went bang or crash would the Fabia 1.9SDI be a good choice for the job. Cheap to buy and reliable as an anvil but now that I've checked the numbers it's not actually that much better on fuel (57mpg vs 51mpg, so about 12%). In fact now that I look at it the 1.9TDI Octavia and the 1.9SDI Fabia get the same 57mpg.I agree that company vehicles don't need outrageous engines but there gets to a point when having too little power surely makes the vehicle unsafe. I thought the SDI was an interesting economy choice but now I think I'll stick to the TDI if my car needs replacing.

Hardly pedantic. Having a limited makes sod all difference in that scenario if you haven't got a decent amount of power.Right, then, let's have another go.

I knew it wouldn't be long until the "dangerously slow" comments would appear! A vehicle is only unsafe if you put it in an unsafe position.I agree that company vehicles don't need outrageous engines but there gets to a point when having too little power surely makes the vehicle unsafe. If I was driving round a fully loaded van weighing 2 tonnes or so I would certainly want much more than 68bhp.
I have the previous shape Caddy with the 1.9 SDI engine, with a whopping a 64bhp and I'm guessing worse aerodynamics. It certainly wasn't fast, but never once did I feel it was dangerous. You had to pay extra attention on slip roads as you couldn't quite make 70 and overtakes were only doable with a run-up on a road with very good visibility.
The SDI engines are actually quite nice units, they are more responsive at low RPM and don't bog down like an off boost TDI.
