Is there anything that can be done to improve night vision behind the wheel of a 993. The standard headlamps aren't great. Apart from having Xenons put in, which I assume will do the job but are very expensive, is their a good cheaper alternative?

Think 9m is doing a deal on gas discharge (Xenons) at the moment.

Check rennlist for xenon in the 993 forum, there are numerous pictures of people showing what their headlights looked like before, one of each, and after.

It's on my list for sure.

Thinking about this myself. Some UK owner posted recently on rennlist about some HID kit for £200 that works pretty good.

Also, cleaning the headlight lenses from the inside is supposd to help. There is a p-car diy for that. I'm going to give that a try, though will probably end up with HIDs.

Cheers, Al.

Yup, clean the insides of the glass -- mine were a bit murky but then the units are nine years old -- which makes a noticeable difference. Then go to 9M (usual disclaimer) and buy two Xenon kits (one main, another for dipped). Fit them yourself -- it's not hard, instructions on http://p-car.com (no 'www').

Suddenly you can see at night...

There's a cheap and cheerful conversion where you buy a pair of HID bulb with H1 fitting/base so you can slot into existing headlight unit with minimal alteration. The whole set inc all the clever bits come up to @£500 or so. I'm thinking of doing it at some point but there's always other mods to do first. Try this site. Haven't visited it for ages so things might be different now. If you do do it, let's know how you get on.

I've had a look at 9M and Xenons are 329+VAT and then there's fitting on top of that so a bit more than I wanted to spend.

Has anyone got any suggestions of a cheaper alternative? Maybe something that's not as good as Xenons but better than the standard lights?

My main beams are okay i think, but the dipped could definitely do with a boost.

I suppose you could always rig up a couple of relays and some heftier wires since the battery is so close to the headlights anyway, then you could run (cough, helloooo officer) 100W bulbs couldn't you?

Might be a silly answer...but can you just go for brighter bulbs and clean the lenses as mentioned?

The bulbs I am thinking of are the blue type that Phillips, and Osram et al produce, and Halfords make equivalents too IIRC.

You really don't get the 'wow, it's daylight' factor without the HID kit, IME. The £329 9M price is the cheapest I've seen this technology -- I bought my kit in March when they were nearer £600 a pop...

Could try slightly higher wattage but be careful of the wiring and reflectors. Again, if you're cautious, look on rennlist for people with experience doing this.

If your other car was a Defender, you'd think the standard 993 lights weren't so bad after all...

Have put some Osram Silverstar's in the 993 - although all that glass in the design of the eliptical dip beam reduces their effect somewhat.

There was a write up a while ago in the PCGB mag about Philips power2night bulbs which are street legal, interchangeable with standard bulbs and as good as their competition only range. Don't know anything about prices though.

It was myself that posted about the HID kit I got off Ebay.

The difference is amazing. Went and bought the so called super bright bulbs to replace the high beam ones, but they still look yellow compared to the 6000k HID ones.

If you can pick up a kit at a good price, they are a very easy install, plug and play really.

Hi Maurice. I assume this is MoC2S from PCGB? I don't have a copy of Dec PP; do you know how I can get a copy of the article?

Barry,

I had a similar dilema a few weeks ago and bought the silver star osram bulbs. They are obviously not as good as the HID kits but a definite improvment over the OEM lights. Might get a HID kit later but got other things I want for my tt first.

I just put in the Osram silverstar +50s and cleaned the lenses. Big improvement. My lights (both beams) have gone from borderline dangerous to not bad at all.

abarber, whre did you get the Osrams from,,I went to Halfords earlier and they only had their own brand which speculate a 50% improvment.
I need to do something, I have just come home in the dark and the only way I knew the lights were on was because the dashboard was lit up...hopeless.

Oh for pity's sake, Pablo - use the force!
