UK Storm

So it is alleged we have a hurricane about to hit around tomorrow evening and Monday. Here is where it is expected to impact:



For most this is a warning worth heeding, but for us photographers this is a time of opportunity!

I live just north east of London. Has anyone got any ideas of locations where I could shoot this storm? Within an hour or 2 hours of Hertfordshire. I was thinking about the coast and capturing the movement in the water.

Any ideas chaps?

The coast sounds like a good idea, with waves crashing over a pier or rocks. Take a cloth to keep the lens clean as your bound to get some sea spray I would have thought. And don't forget your own safety too

I would be more inclined to shot from a sheltered position, out of car window, tailgate, seafront shelter. Driving wind and rain not going to be nice and near impossible to keep your lens dry even with a hood. But saying that I might venture down to Brighton Marina for midday weather window.

I do love a good storm. One thing I miss about America is the thunder and lightening you get with large storms. I hear it happens more often in the South, but up here in Leeds it's very rare.

Southend was a thought. There was also a place with a lighthouse I thought about.

My safety comes firmly second to getting the best shot. You can quote this to the papers should I get blown off the rocks to my death!

If I die I better make sure the shots aren't OOF or have blown highlights or that really would be a kicker.

Sadly about 4 or more hours away from me, IIRC. I'm thinking of trying Hunstanton/King's Lynn area. Anyone any experience there?

Dunwich Heath may be a go-er - you've got some options there. Either the cliff front/pebbly beach or the actual heath itself. If you have a look on Justin's Flickr feed he's got a few shots there (as have I, not on the same level though.)

Given it's location you've got a few other options nearby - Orford Ness lighthouse or the Black Beacon seem like they could work. Not been there myself mind.

I popped out yesterday to capture some images of raging seas, but totally forgot I was in Malta for the week.

I was too lazy (& perhaps sensible!) to go out this morning, so I took this from the window. For a moment, I thought my sensor needed a serious cleaning!

As the big winds did not hit during Sunday daylight hours, I just popped down to the local beach.
Seems like the windsurfers were making the most of it
