Hi everyone, I've been a long time lurker around these parts and thought I should sign up the other day smile

I'm having a bit of a dilemma at the moment as to what car to buy, and was hoping I could get some advice.

I've got a max budget of £4000, I do about 500 miles a week on average, mostly motorway work from norfolk to devon.

Common sense says I go with a diesel, I've been looking at e46 330d's and e39 530d's at the moment. I'm at a loss as to what else I should look at so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Tom

Forgot to add that space isn't really a massive issue as I don't have kids, so silly suggestions welcome aswell smile

Just because it's late and alcohol might be involved.

For a more sporty ideas,

Mr2 mk3, 3500 for a good low mileage clean and FSH. 46MPG on a cruise, mid thirties normal driving.

Although there is no real space inside...

All good suggestions guys, I think I need something that'll do around 40 mpg to be affordable, I'm pretty good with spanners and look after my own cars

I'd get rid of that before you start getting chased from the forums with stakes and pitch forks!

Utterly vile, wouldn't trust it as far s I could throw it. For that price you could get a near-mint one that hadn't been beaten with the chav stick.

Leftfield choice:

Jaguar XK8 on LPG with plenty of change left from £4k

Should easily see the equivalent cost of 50mpg+ on a motorway/dual carriageway cruise.

Surely maintenance costs (on the top 5 at least) would defeat the main object here?

Well buy one with fresh tyres new discs and pads solid exhaust and recent major service. Then it can be cheap motoring or only if something breaks.

As with any car buy one with good history of work being carried out ie invoices not just a stamp in a book which may not be genuine.

Those top 5 are certainly fun cars and will be memorable

I think a £4k E39 M5 will be anything but cheap motoring.

That lpg jag certainly is interesting, bit old man for me I think though, and there is only one lpg station on my route, so that e39 is a turd, what's peoples opinions on 330d's? Also liking the leon fr idea, I suppose a fabia vrs would fit my price bracket aswell?
