I've got a free MOT with Halfords now would you trust them with your Aston?

No.
Either let your dealer do it while in for a service or take it to the MOT place they use. Would wait while they did it if going elsewhere though, the lure of a joyride would be too strong for some.

If they haven't got the equipment suitable for cars with limited diffs they will have to take it out for for a test drive to check with brakes using an accelerometer.eek

Why save the cost of half a tank of fuel on a place that can't even put a push bike together? Your car deserves better.

Give it to someone who will buy you a pint drink

Took mine to Mr Clutch in MK last week. They were fully aware of potential jacking issues with these types of cars so were very careful while I watched. Wasn't free but still a very reasonable £23 and all completed in about 30 minutes.

Don't do it. I wouldn't trust them with my sisters 51 plate Saxo.

Why do you believe someone will do a 45 minute MOT for nothing?

It's because they are looking for work and make the money on getting some work from the car, or charging for a retest if you do it yourself.

That's what I always think as well and I think just the same if I don't pay the standard MOT price - if they are prepared to discount it from the standard price then what are they looking to find to make their money up ?

Phil, you are indeed correct, it's the maximum price ( https://www.gov.uk/getting-an-mot/mot-test-fees ), not the standard price.

The reason I ask, matey, is that my local garage charges less than the £54 and like many others on here I trust him with any of my (ex) vehicles.

On no occasion have any of them failed.

It can sometimes be a reflection of lower overheads etc but I agree I would not even take Amy's Corsa to Halfords nono

You are right, I think trust is the key thing. I take my Clio to a local garage in Ellesmere Port and have done so for a number of years. I never feel ripped off and they are fair and reasonable, so I keep returning.

I believe the cost to the garage of doing an MOT is around £5... Ie the money hey have to pay the ministrysmile

Of course on top of that they have, wages, cost of specific equipment, and overheads...so anything around £40 to £50 quid for a proper MOT at a proper test station, is a bit of a bargain really. smile

It certainly gives me some reassurance to know that an experienced MOT guy has checked my car overyes

I've used kwik-fit with my 9, kept an eye on them, no problems, all very professional. No way would I use them with the 5 though!
