Problem with ventilation
Discussion
Hi there,
i have owned my wedge for about 2 weeks now. I am very happy with it but have discovered some faults i'd like to get rid of.
The thing which bothers me the most is the ventilation. It doesn't work at all. None of the 3 stages works. Is there a common fault i should look for to fix it?
The next problem, i have a little play in a wheel bearing at the right front wheel. Are these wheel bearings adjustable?
Is it normal that the car smells of exhaust fumes when standig at a traffic light?
I have a us-spec 280i with cats. The idle at cold start is not good. Revs shifting all the time. When the lambda sensor is connected the idle is bad even when the engine is warm. When i disconnect the lambda sensor the idle at cold start is bad, but after about 2 minutes eversthing is all right.
Any ideas?
I appreciate every help
thanks

Hi..The interior fan on most wedges are not the best in the world..Mine only works on position 2..If you have checked fuses and they are ok then you could remove the switch and turn it upside down to reveal the copper contacts, If these are corroded then you won't get a very good connection, The switch can be opened to be cleaned and checked…On the side you will see some small lugs that hold the switch together..These can be pressed in gently and the switch can be opened to clean but be careful not to force them or they will break…Once cleaned and replaced it should work..Better…If not then it might be a case of checking all the wires to the blower fan and checking and cleaning earths.
The front wheel bearings are adjustable..See diagram at the bottom.
You should not be able to smell exhaust fumes whilst stationery, On most cars the boot rubber is to blame so check that first…If not then you will need to raise the car on a vehicle ramp/Lift to inspect the system..Check the mid mufflers as they are normally positioned under the seating area..Check the connections to the CAT also.
As for the idle problem unfortunately I'm not too familiar with the US spec cars but check the condition of the Lambda sensor as these will give false readings if coked up, They can be cleaned with something like brake & clutch cleaner…However it might need replacing…Hope this helps…Cheers…Ziga

There is supposed to be a small amount of play in the front wheel bearings, this is normal as they're taper rollers and need the clearance to allow them to expand. Most modern cars are front wheel drive and have no play, so MOT inspectors who don't know about such things will fail the car for what they think is excessive play.
If you adjust all the play out of a taper roller, when it gets warm it will seize.
Check that the rubber gaiter around the gear lever (under the leather/ vinyl one) isn't split, that is a common cause of exhaust fumes entering the cabin.

Good point i forgot about that..Are they supposed to be detached from the centre console as mine is and when travelling at the speed limit my leather gaiter blows up to reveal the road...
When the interior fan stops working you need to first of all check the switch, relay, wiring and the fuse as these are the easiest to check. Make sure there is power at the switch and that all earths are good. If all is good, then it has to be the blower motor, and that is a difficult job to remove as most of the dash has to be dismantled to get to it. It is a job you can do at home but requires time and a lot of patience.

Underneath the leather gaiter there's supposed to be a rubber one. I think ford Sierra fits OK with a little fettling. You can keep it held down with contact adhesive and a couple of aly plates self-tapped down to the fiberglass.
After all this time the rubber gaiter gets shredded, or in Zig's case, disappears completely.
Fumes can also get in through the bulkhead grommits.

You should pop a mirror down there Zig facing upwards of course,!
That reminds me of a pair of shoes i used to own..They had mirrored toes, I used to wear them any time i went to a party and people always used to comment on how happy i looked even though i constantly looked down..

I used a Sierra one on my car; I seem to recall the 'tube' for the shift lever is off-centre towards one end and the gaiter is marked for Petrol and Diesel - think I found Diesel end forward was a better fit. Everybody else's car is bound to be different
Silicone sealant and half a dozen self-tappers keeps my gaiter in.
As an aside, I used Sikaflex 291i on a job at work and it was the absolute dogs' tackle, can thoroughly recommend it for sticking and sealing on a Wedge - we used it on an offshore darkroom cabin as it's a marine sealant. Sadly there were no left-overs from the box of 6 we bought...
