Seems like the new M4 is just a glorified 335i! Better suspension perhaps, but not much else - discuss!

Unless they've really made a big mistake, I strongly doubt it will be anything like the 435i. From my (admittedly limited) experience, the M cars are much tighter, more focused vehicles than the "normal" model they're derived from.

I can vouch for my E90 M3 being a totally different ball game from the other E90 3-series I've driven (335i, 330d, 335d). I can't imagine it won't be the same with the new M3/4.

I am always very pedantic about the M3 & just call it a 3 series with a nice engine under the bonnet but in reality the M3 is genuinely 80% different including body/suspension/chassis/brakes/engine & I agree having owned a E90 330d & E92 M3 they are poles apart...but the M3 is still a 3 series when all said & done.

What is there to discuss other than how ridiculous your statement is.

A bit of a silly statement also, believe it or not that's what the '3' stands for in ///M3.

I know what you are saying but I meant the M3 isn't a purpose built performance machine it's based on a bog standard saloon car & that's not a great place to start in the first place imo.

A true drivers car should be designed to be a performance car in the first place not the other way round that's what I am getting at.

True, but on the other hand, that's why M3's and M5's are so much cheaper than the purpose built machines whose performance they match.

As I believe it the M4 will have twin-turbo's as opposed to the twin-scroll turbo in the 435i (N55 engine). The Twin-scroll unit in the N55 could not hope to reach the estimated 430bhp power output of the M4 engine as it runs out of puff way before then.

After having the E90 M3 and 335D, the M3 was poles above the three series but interiors were not.
It drove miles different.
I had the F10 550i M Sport and now have the LCI M5 2014 model, these are poles apart also, but interiors are not.

You have to base the "M" cars on basic saloons as has been mentioned "Cost" would be way to high to develop "individual M models", we would be looking at Ferrari prices.eek

Surely BMW have chucked everything at the M4.

It will be great and then some.

You'd only think that if you only compare performance figures on the internet, in reality the m4 will be more involving, handle better and be more adjustably generally, rather than a swift but dull car.

If anyone is in any doubt as to the work that has gone into and the differences between a 435i and the new M4, read this thread:

A work colleague sent me a picture of the new M4 in a dealers today :

I asked why he sent me a picture of a 428i and he replied to say he didn't notice that, just saw a 4 series and a M logo...

A lot of bespoke work has obviously gone into it but it's still 50% a bog standard 3 series (according to the link), which is no bad thing because the new 3 series is a very nice car.
