Does anyone actually understand road tax bands on Light vans ? Been on the DVLA website ,it`s not clear like cars ,don`t understand why tax on van`s is not based on emissions.
Thought the Government had carbon targets so why not offer cheaper road tax for more efficient vans .Seems like double standards to me.

I filled in an enquiry form to DVLA ,they gave me some bull s
t explaining vans have not been tested for emissions like cars
The Government spends millions sending MP`s to these conventions to bring carbon emissions down ,seems like they have double standards .
Cars and vans are using the same engines and we have a lot of car derived vans which are basicly the same but have completely different tax bands.
This is the answer I got .

Thank you for your e-mail of 26 September addressed to the Chief Executive about Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) for vans. Your e-mail has been passed to the Corporate Affairs Directorate and I have been asked to reply.
The decisions of successive Governments have resulted in VED being structured according to vehicle type and registration date with VED contributing to general taxation revenues. Cars registered before March 2001 are taxed according to engine size, and those registered from March 2001 onwards taxed according to carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. All other vehicles like vans and motorcycles pay VED according to engine size or vehicle weight.
Car CO2 measurement occurs during type approval testing, which approves new models of car for sale in Europe. There is a similar type approval testing process for vans, including car-derived models, but until recently it has not included the capture of CO2 data. There is a gradual process underway to compile CO2 information on newly developed models of van. However, for current vans we have van taxation that is based on reduced air pollutant emissions. For example, in the UK a van that met the Euro 5 pollutant emissions standard ahead of December 2010 receives a £80 VED discount.
I am grateful for your suggestion about the introduction of a VED structure for vans based on their CO2 emissions levels. However, at Budget 2013 the Government announced that it had no plans to make significant changes to VED structure for cars and vans in this Parliament.
I hope this clarifies the position.
Yours faithfully
