INSANE - Insurance quote - read it and laugh
Discussion
I pay £1,495 per year fully comp for a £60K unmodified 2002, 996 Turbo (LHD), unlimited milage, 7 years no claims, tracker monitor.
I have bought a second car for trundling around town + sometimes the work run.
Year 2000 Polo 1.4 SE TDi, value £3,800
The best quote I got for the Polo (all details the same except Polo has no tracker) again from Direct Line was :
£980 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Insanity !!! Apparently one can only use ones no claims bonus against one car and so I have to start from scratch as a new driver with NO no-claims.
Surely Direct Line should be delighted I am driving my £3,800 banger and NOT a £60K supercar ?
What do you folk with Porker and Bangers do ?

This is common practice…
Do a search for a "fleet policy" on PH and see if that helps. I understand that some insurance companies will mirror NCB from one car to the next..
Just in exactly the same position (albeit with lesser pork and a Landrover Defender)and bought a Ford Focus diesel estate shopping car for £3k.
It looked like it was going to be major wonga as my wife and I already had a car each but thankfully my friendly broker got us a quote with Allianz for £370 fully comp. Turns out Allianz do a mirror policy which gives you max no claims even when starting from scratch and provided you remain prang free they match the NCB on both policies.
Maybe you can get something similar?

Ian D

What you need is an insurer who will mirror your NCD from your primary car onto your 911. Most insurers won't do this this; they apply the NCD to one car and you're on your own for the 2nd car. Try Porsche Insurance Services or Performance Marques. It's well worth phoning around to the companies listed in the back of GT&PP or 911PW.
It also seems to be worthwhile to have a spouse/partner listed on the Porsche policy (so long as the driving record is good and she's of a comparable age). My policy went down 10% upon adding the rev limiter.

I have a Turbo MX-5 - very heavily modified - around 250hp, been that way for four years. I have it on a <5000 mile policy with my old Vauxhall Astra (worth about £500) as an everyday car. Cost is just under £1000 for the two of them and the '5 is insured for the cost of the modifications too. This with AON.
Earlier this year I bought a RX-8 and they let me mirror the NCB across the Astra and RX-8 and leave the MX-5 on the restricted policy. Additional cost was about £500 again. Everywhere else I phoned wanted to offer me £1000+ insurance on the RX-8 as I couldn't use my NCB as it was tied up on a £500 Astra! I sold the RX-8 later but that's another story...
Mirroring's the way to do it if possible!

But not as many as used to. They all stopped doing it during the month I was phoning round for quotes.
Bell Direct still do it though.
Had the same problem about a year ago, when I bought a £4k Smart as a run around. Rang around for insurance and found this to be aroundc £900. Only about £50 less that I was paying on my 996 cab!
A way round it is to have it "third partied only", as long as the second car was not really of major value. Your policy on the Porsche gives you third party cover against driving any car, as long as it wasn't yours! Not applicable to hired cars. Did not even have to have a separate policy by the owner. Well, I guess my grandmother just got herself a Smart.
Finally sold it and resorted to sharing the missus car, which had its own policy in her name, with me as a named driver. Cost about £500 fully comp (A Class Merc AMG).

Ok then how do you get the car taxed if you do this? I thought the guys at the post office need to see a valid certificate of insurance for the car. If the Smart is effectively being insured on the Porker's third-party-other-cars policy, then you'd have to use the Porsche insurance doc - and I'll bet the post office types won't accept that...

Most "driving other peoples cars under TPO cover" relies on the other vehicle having its own insurance...
My Clio costs £1750 whilst the 993 costs £1200. OK OK, so all my NCD is on the porsche, with none on the 172, and the clio does 25k miles per annum, and the clio is parked in the street at my not so sulubrious address whilst the porsche resides at my parents better address - but still!!! The clio is worth about £9k max wilst the 993 is nearer £29k!
That is with Privilege who were the cheapest by some margin. I do know that Admiral will mirror NCD, but they do not appear to be very competitive. I am currently mulling over whether it is worth lumping the extra cost for a year or so in order to benefit from the future savings off full protected NCD on both cars.
