All new components with loads of different connection capabilities.

Instructions say to connect using HDMI leads, shop advises connecting DVD to TV with HDMI and optical cnx from TV to AV Receiver. Apparently the HDMI implementation is a bit variable between devices.

What does the PH wisdom say about this?

Try it with HDMI first.

One HDMI from DVD to receiver and one from receiver to the TV. If your TV and receiver have ARC (audio return channel) on one of the inputs then connect with that as it means the sound can go to/from the TV without needing another connection. Otherwise you may need a S/P-DIF (optical/coax) audio connection from the TV to receiver when you want the TV to go to the receiver.

Their advice is OK except that TVs in general won't pass through the audio signal from your DVD back to the receiver untouched so with their setup you'd want the DVD player directly connected to the receiver.

For me, my receiver has no HDMI so all video is from each component via HDMI to the TV and either S/P-DIF for digital audio to the receiver or 6 channel ext out from the Blu-Ray player so I get HD audio smile

Sorry if that was long winded!

TV is Samsung UE40F5500 (series 5)
Amp is Denon AVRX1000
DVD will be a new blue ray player - not yet decided as I can't decide on any differentiating features!

This makes a difference, if it had been a DVD player then you get no HD audio hence my suggestions.

Basically, HDMI from BR to amp and HDMI from amp to TV. The TV has an input with audio return channel (ARC) so use this input on the TV and that should be all you need smile
