Guys

I have recently aquired a low mileage (60k) 2008 Accord 2.4 VTEC Touring. With an auto box.

The car appears to be running great, smooth, reasonably refind and comfortable. The only thing is, I don't feel this whole "VTEC kicked in yo" reputation. As the car hits about 6250, there is more noise, but no discernible feeling of a "shove". So, is the internet mimi a complete myth, or is my car broke?

Perhaps it's the fact it's a heavy old tourer with an auto box that stops the "feeling"

For context, I'm coming from a succession of VAG TDi's and then a 6 cylinder (petrol) 5 series tourer.....

depends on the type of vtec (not sure there is a big kick on that engine) it works on oil pressure so if your oil level is low vtec won't engage.

My guess is that the weight and the auto box are going to blunt it fairly significantly. Also VTEC doesn't provide enough power to wheelspin at 50mph. wink

Plug your laptop into the ODB port you might have a manifold danger warning.

I'd definitely do this sooner rather than later, you do not want your floor falling out.

yes And none of the recent ones that I've tried kick all that hard on the cam change. They're nothing like as pronounced as Toyota's VVTL-i system.

My old t sport corolla , didnt kick like a b189c with a thump .Its just a weird feel ,kind of like weightlessness on a roller coaster .Needs to be in 2nd gear to feel it to its full effect mind

I've only driven that engine much in the Elise - you can certainly feel it when it's only lugging 850kg around. hehe

The 2.4 doens't have a "kick" - it's an "intelligent" VTEC system that doesn't have a "on-off" type of power delivery.

As the others have already said, the more modern VTEC engines have a much smoother delivery.
The reputation of VTEC kicking in came from the first variable valve timing engine, (b16a ?) fitted to the 1990 CRX. Vtec was all or noting on that car and when it engaged at just under 6K it gave a very pleasing shove. The feeling was similar to an 80's laggy turbo setup.

You could also remove the resonator box (part of the air filter housing) for improved airflow. Normally it didn't make a lot of difference, in fact, it was doubtfull as to whether it made any difference at all to performance. But, when Vtec "kicked" in, the normally civilised engine note was swamped by a satisfyingly loud raspy intake roar.

What they said. In the NSX the VTEC crossover is less pronounced than in the early cars.

And, as it happens the automatic version has a less powerful engine with a different (wider?) VTEC implenetation.

TLDR: you should have bought the Accord Type R.

Vtec not all that - surely not!?

As others have said on modern Hondas the switchover is far smoother but also on Accords the gearing being quite tall and the spacing between 2nd,3rd,4th takes you out of Vtec which numbs the enjoyment somewhat.

I remember when my Integra was delivered, and I went for a cheeky little drive. I couldn't believe just how hard it 'kicks'

Believe the hype, its fantastic fun.

Just to repeat - newer VTEC is not a hard kick like it used to be.

Add the Auto box and 1600kg weight with 125 bhp/ton and I wouldn't expect a noticable push in the back.

My S2000 has a noticable surge when VTEC engages, but not like the old Type R's.
