Discussion
Just bought a second hand car from a private seller. The tax ran out last month September and he did not bother to tax it as it has been off the road due to trying to sell it.
I now need to tax it however was going to wait until the end of this month as its seems pointless taxing it now when the end of the month is a few days away, so it sitting on my drive.
I am going to go to the post office, taking the new keeper part of the V5, mot and insurance.
My questions are:
1) Can I go and tax it before the 1st November and if so I seem to remember its 2 days?
2) As the car was not sorned will I have to pay for October anyway?

There's a number of problems with this one!
The previous owner should have either taxed it or SORNed it. However, provided the date of transfer is recorded properly, these problems should not affect you, but bear in mind that it cannot now be driven or kept on a road. You obviously brought it home on a trailer - right?
Under the latest regime, I'm fairly sure that you now cannot backdate the tax to the start of October; you'll only be able to tax it from Nov 1st, and the earliest that you could do this (as it hasn't currently got tax - it's different if it's just a renewal) is two working days before - i.e. Wednesday 30th.
Technically, you still can't keep it/use it on the road as the tax does not start until the first, but tax discs do not have a start date displayed, only an end-date...
