Star Trek Online...Any players?
Discussion
Hi folks,
I used to play this when it first came out but was very buggy and little to do but I got a lifetime sub as I wanted to invest in it whilst playing the Beta. However the beta actually became the actual game, bugs and all.
So I have returned to it recently and its much much better, lots to do, better interface and instruction.
I just wondered if there were any players from the PH bunch
I am Melnok or Cassar in game, federation player

As a closet trek fan I do find myself drawn to this. I actually pretty much gave up on it though after a while as I ran out of things to do but since then I joined a fleet and the weekly/daily events add a lot more fun to it.
They have added a lot of content recently though and just about to launch season 8 so its all go.
Fleet I'm in www.ufplanets.com

Annual thread resurrection time! So, is there anybody else playing on PC?
I decided to give this a go, even though I'm not big on MMO games and even more suspious of anything that is 'free to play'.
Turns out, it is actually really f
king good! I played a bit of Eve Online a few years back, but gave up after a few months as I found the game to be very complicated and a lot of grind.
Thankfully, STO is not anywhere near as bad. The premise is similar to Eve, but is a lot easier to get your head round and there is a big single player campaign that gets you leveling up and shows you the ropes.
Lots of ships from the Star Trek universe, including from the original series. The graphics are pretty good for the space element and the battles are seriously good fun. The ground based stuff is a little hit and miss, feeling a bit tacked on. There is an in-game economy, that I currently don't fully understand as yet. Lots of decent voice acting and loads of stuff to customise.
The bad stuff; it can be buggy, but apparently it is a hell of a lot better than it was at initial release. The bugs aren't massive or too frequent, but they are still there.
Quite a few of the Klingon and Romulan ships are behind a paywall; you can unlock these using in-game currency, but it isn't quick and you'll need to have a good understanding of the game.
The important thing is that you can play the game and enjoy it without spending money. The leveling isn't a slow process and you are awarded new ships to choose from at key markers (every ten levels), so you'll never get stuck with the same ship. Lots of weapons and stuff to change on the ships too, so you can make it your own.
All in all, I was quite surprised at how good it was considering the free to play nature. Would recommend - 7.5/10

Played earlier this year when I posted. It's not bad at all and no need to pay anything to enjoy it, not too many bugs as you say but TBH if it weren't Star Trek themed I wouldn't have given it a second look
The biggest annoyance is it can be ridiculously complex, with so many things to manage/level up/perks/crews/etc and they seem to change them often, I guess its a way of keeping things new. Would also be nice to upgrade ships (number of slots etc.) to match the higher Tier ones, think the only option is to buy premium ships from the store.

Played this for a while on the PC last year, enjoyed the space battles quite a bit but it had lots of issues that eventually put me off.
1) Buggy as hell
2) Away missions are boring fetch quests and the combat system is rubbish compared to better developed MMO's. Most scripted missions have at least a couple of these so you can't avoid them either.
3) As the poster above said, levelling up is way to complicated with little in the way of help to set you on the right track. The basic ship\captain upgrades are easy enough but then you have all the other bits, research, officer training, recruiting, career progression are way more complicated then they need to be.
It's available on the PS4 now too as a free to play so every time I switch on the PS4 I'm tempted to download it but then I remember the bad bits outweigh the good and I don't bother. If it has improved significantly I may give it a go though.

I have it on the Xbox One. Sadly whilst I think I'd enjoy the game, I don't think I have could put in all the time required to get the best out of it. I'm keeping it and may persevere later, certainly I enjoy the space battles but the away mission stuff is dire. It definitely needs a patch or three as it's not exactly bug free.

Played it, decided it was c**p, deleted from the PS4.
To be fair I don't blame you, I was quite surprised they'd ported it over to consoles due to the complexity. I was going to give it a go on my recently acquired Xbox One but remembered I needed Gold to play online. Also agree the ground missions are tedious compared to the space battles. At least my character is a nice-looking-from-behind female Vulcan
