DTM 2013 review: Time For Tea?

Plenty of pomp alongside some great racing footage in these DTM highlights

Touring cars, particularly the DTM, often make for exciting viewing. But this highlights vid from the 2013 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters promises more than just excitement; the entire season was 'In a Sensual Frenzy'. Indeed.

Anyway, bizarre German translations aside, it's a nice little vid of an excellent touring car series, albeit with some slightly overwrought elements. In fact, the entire first minute and a half, following the drivers (and, bizarrely, the grid girls) preparing for race is a bit naff. So much is in slow motion that it's a wonder it only uses 90 seconds.

But stick with it and the video reveals just what we love about the DTM; large grids of V8 touring cars racing hard and close on some great circuits. With crashes. And slow-mo used quite sparingly. As has been said before, it all serves to make the BTCC look a little tame.

To a particularly OTT soundtrack, the video ends with a few post-race victory clips and the spotlight on overall champ Mike Rockenfeller. Plus more slow-mo. Bring on 2014!

If you live in the sticks like me, then getting half a meg download is an achievement. Most of the time I have to watch videos in 360p or less to ensure the frame transition is smooth and flowing. Waiting for the video to load up and keep the film like a film and not some stop frame gimmick video tries my patience on a daily basis.

So, you can imagine my frustration at watching this video thinking to myself, "must be the bandwidth, it looks like stop frame and not slow motion" Have watched it one and a half times now, what a pile of horse manure. A complete waste of a good cup of tea and 9 minutes of my life.

it is a bit jerky in places - must have been a problem when they converted the format (or something).

Dtm exciting oh do give over ever seen a full race even worse than formula one. Im still bemused why ph keeps on reviews of dtm but doesn't give a mention about the btcc the last article about it was basicly saying whats the point of it.

Come on ph lets try and support the national series for once I mean we have 400bhp fire spitting cars, fwd/rwd 10-12 different types of cars grids above 24 cars at one point 28 with next year looking to have a capacity grid. If all the main drivers stay we will have 5 champions on the grid in 4 different teams, or has ph not been watching this year and think its the same as 10 years back after the super touring era.

I have to agree, DTM is ANOTHER boring modern race championship and has been for over a decade now. The cars look special and go quickly but it's little more than a boring 1 make series (I know there are more than 1 manufacturer) with boring processional racing due to too much downforce. The Australian V8's kill this series for spectacle and is by far and a way the best form of touring car racing. I want to see saloon cars move around, to not stick like an F3000 car and to provide cars that look like they are hard to drive.

DTM, no thanks.

Thumbs up! I tried to get into DTM, but it was incredibly dull! I watch F1, BTCC and WEC when I can and you cant beat the BTCC for excitement. My only beef is that it takes up pretty much all of Sunday when its on.

Single seaters - with a roof!!

I actually quite like the DTM, but it can be processional - though the last race, which Glock won was a good one. They need to stop trying to make it F1-lite....and copying everything that F1 does.

Saying that - the 3 Manufacturers and all the big money sponsors seem happy. I'm sure the BTCC would love some of those big money sponsors...

DTM is a deeply impressive championship with amazing promotion, engineering and driving standards. However, as a spectacle, for us in the UK Brands doesn't quite do it justice. I suspect that to get the full DTM experience Norisring or Zandvoort would be the absolute pinnacle.

Having just come back from Bathurst and Gold Coast 600, I can confirm that for pure visual and aural thrills the Aussies have saloon cars wrapped up. I've been fortunate to see BTCC through the last 25 years as well as the usual ETCC, WTCC, ITC as well as all the historic categories. V8 Supercars around Surfers is in a completely different league to all of them for sheer, punching, visceral drama.

Saying all that, we're tremendously lucky to have DTM visit the UK - it's a proper showcase of professional, German motor racing and should be applauded for being what it is. How wonderful that we can enjoy all these various categories, which are so different in character.

I hadn't seen the 2014 DTM calendar - it was released while I was in Australia. Shame the championship won't be visiting the UK any longer but just seems like a good excuse for a trip to the Norisring!

As for WTCC, well I haven't seen it live since it ran with FIA GT in the mid-2000s. I'm looking forward to seeing the transition to the new specification cars and the arrival of Citroen. It'd be hypocritical of me to complain about a lack of a UK round as I hadn't been to see the series since it moved from Silverstone to Brands Hatch.

V8SC, well you just can't mess with them. Infinitely better to watch from the trackside than I ever dared to imagine. Such a shame you need 24 hours on a plane to see the cars in action as TV simply doesn't do them justice. Of the great racing experiences, I would place V8SC very, very high.

I went to see the DTM at Brands the year Di Resta won the race. There was not one overtake. It was as interesting as watching cars queue for a cross channel ferry. But, still they return to that circuit.

I went to see the DTM at brands a couple of years ago - it was amazing! It was chucking it down, and i'm fairly sure it was the first race of the season where it had rained.

Anybody that says they are boring needs to stand on the inside of Druids, in the rain, to see 20 odd late braking, bellowing V8 leviathans, squirm and slide around the track's corners - phenomenal.

I'm sure it must be something you have to see in real life to appreciate it. After i went to see them, it even made watching it on the internet/TV seem a lot more interesting. I will agree that it is a little bit of a procession sometimes. However, not many motorsports/ sports at all where the girls get a go alongside the boys - something that they could do with encouraging across the whole of motorsport/sport. (Having a female F1 test driver doesn't quite count).

I loved the vibe at DTM events and support series giving a chance to meet the up coming big names in F3 and F4. They bring video walls with better commentators and teams are more approachable than BTCC at pits and talking to drivers is what made it better than BTCC for me.

The racing is hard as BTCC maybe even more so sparks flying everywhere. Tbh its as close as we ever got to having modern F1 cars at Brands for its slithering about rarely pointing in straight line, noise and sheer pace of the things it was special event.

Absolutely. The sheer power of those cars is something which you can only understand first hand. Everyone complaining that racing cars are too quiet needs to hear these things. Like you say, a field of DTM cars pounding round Brands is a sight and sound to behold. It's the only time I've ever FELT sound being forced into my ears.

Personally, I quite like 500hp flame throwing spark distribution units. I'll miss the Brands meeting.

I am going to take a shot here, are you relatively young? If you grew up in the 70's as I did and then watched Rover v Capri, ETCC with Volvo, Jag, Rover, 635CSi into the RS500/M3 era, moving to super tourers then into the peak of DTM when it came to Donignton, the days of Audi, M3, Mercedes 190's with interlopers from Carltons and Mustangs you will appreciate how this modern processional bore-a-thin is ste, utter and total st and also perhaps why even modern BTCC does not wet the appetite that much.

I've seen modern DTM, it's ste. biggrin
