The Mercedes main dealer is quoting £2150 inc VAT , fitting and storage for the SL350 for the tyres and wheels.

Never had winter tyres or a Merc before so was wondering if this is a reasonable price? Works out around £540 per corner.

I like the convenience of doing everything through the Mercedes garage and not having any hassle of storage. They said they will keep the other tyres and swap them round come spring.

Would appreciate any advice , thanks

For what it's worth my SLK has just been fitted with a set of Conti WinterContact TS830P 225/40/18 and 255/35/18.
These clicked in at £634 on my standard wheels. I've plenty of outbuildings so the normal tyres are stored in there.

Depends how much hassle you want to save ,£1500 I suppose.

Not sure of the size for your car but the following might give you an idea, based upon the spec found online for SL550/600 in the US (from experience, the US manuals are usually pretty close to the UK version for this, certainly for our GL and CL they are).

The manual spec 8.5J x 18" rims with 255/40 R18 95V M+S tyres.

Looking on mytyres.co.uk and assuming we narrow the search to the good quality tyres, you are looking at around £210-£250 a corner for the tyres. For example, the Continental WinterContact TS 830P MO 255/40 R18 99V XL with kerbing rib comes in at £210 a corner so £840 for the set.

No idea of the cost of the wheel but if we go for a rough guess of £300 a corner for an 18" rim, that would be £1200 for those.

Put the two together and you are around the £2000 mark after fitting so that might not make the price seem quote so bad.

We were lucky when I bought my first set of winters in that I managed to pick up four nearly new standard GL 19" rims from someone on eBay at the bargain price of £400 the set. They came from a dealer who had them spare after an upgrade for a customer.

Remember to tell your insurance company when you switch over from one set to the other. Mine wanted to know!

£1,700 for four Continental TS830P winter tyres and four 17" genuine Mercedes-Benz alloys intended for the SL (taste is a matter of taste and all that but these are by far and away the best wheels for the car): http://www.alloywheelsdirect.net/mercedes_alloy_wh...

If you want to sort out your own tyre swap and storage (no good it you live in a pokey little place), then Camskill have the best prices on tyres.

That's an interesting site ... just checked the cost of the AMG alloys on the CL63 .... eek

I have reminded the wife kerbing them will not go down well! biggrin
