Hi,

I've been a lurker for a while but have just signed up. I'm looking for some advice!

I'll be moving to France in the middle of November (until the end of April) to work in a ski resort.

My current insurance policy will only cover me for up to 90 days at a time in the EU, obviously I'll be away for longer than that.

If anyone can point me towards recommended companies who offer cover for more than 90 days abroad it would be appreciated.

If it helps the car will be stored in a secure underground car park and I don't expect to drive it much while I'm there, certainly less than 3000 miles over the 5 months.

Thanks in advance.

Try a good broker - e.g Saffron - who have access to a wide range of policies.

You may struggle. I'm in a similar situation, and am resigned to bringing the car back and restarting the clock. It's worth checking that your policy will cover multiple stints of 90 days anyway as for many that would be the annual limit too.

Most places I called suggested I should be looking at taking out a local policy if I was to be away for that long.

Thanks for the replies.
So far Tesco have been the cheapest, but it's still about 4x what I would be paying for regular uk coverage.
I'm not over 50 so Saga are out unfortunately, I've tried Saffron but the cheapest they could do was £7k (on a car valued at £2k)!!

I used a company called Italsure when I lived in Italy and did the same. Obviously you're not going there, but I think they covered a number of countries.

LV will give you 183 days Euro cover. SAGA, as already mentioned is 365 and that's it for the "sheds".

Other than that you'll need a specialist broker and you will pay a significant increment.

Might be worth a try to see if you can get a French company to cover you on an English plated car. Don't know if they will or what the costs might be but could be worth a try.

My brother does the same (works in Morzine in the winter), I think he's just got a new policy a week or so ago that covers him for 10 months in France. Wasn't much more than a normal policy either, I'll try and get hold of him to see who it's with.

ETA

He's used a broker called Andrew Copeland (http://www.andrewcopeland.co.uk/gcm.htm) for his cover. They cover you for 11 months abroad, with 1 month back in the UK.

Last time I checked under European law your UK insurance will cover you 3rd party for 12 months. If your car is only worth £2k them maybe better just to risk it.

Few options,
Risk it, but they'll be a record of the car leaving the country, so might not be worth the risk.

or cancel the uk policy and instigate a French policy, they will do it for uk registered cars but only for 6 months usually
