The kind of people who drive;

What are they? Friends or foes?

Genuine car enthusiasts with a passion for their vehicles? Or maniacs giving other car lovers a bad name...

What are your views and why?

Thanks,

Street

Some will be genuine enthusiasts. Some will be scrotes. Never my cup of tea but then I was always in the fortunate position of being able to afford a fast car and didn't need to try to pretend it was something it wasn't.

My nephew is into this type of thing (he's only young, bless him).

The loud music and the occasional attrocious driving does annoy me, though.

Have a standard car but for the record there most definatly is 2 types of "boy racers"

There are the enthusiasts, the ones who care what petrol they put in there car, spend more than there wages on modding and customising there car who do it because it is there passion. Generally these type are good drivers who enjoy driving and cars too much to risk life / car by driving wrecklessly. They are also the type who will look after there car and always have new tyres and brakes.

Then there are the ones who drive on slicks, have mis matched mods and little car or respect for anyone, they give the real cruisers a bad name and are general scrotes who most probably arent insured / taxed and simply drive what they want when they want.

All very general I know, just my opinions/

I just don't see the point in spending £20K on a Nova or suchlike cheap car souping it up

Why not just buy a decent car in the first place and spend NOTHING ?

Buy a Merc or Audi, or dare I say it, BMW

Because its all about being individual and customising it. Modders want people to look at them when they pass, whether thats to laugh or on some (like my case) to admire. That wouldnt happen if the car was standard. I have a car worth about 7k. But is standard, my mate has an old Corsa which he has colour coded, lowered, tints, exhaust, new wheels with LP tyres, induction kit plus some tuning and when we are out together, his car is ALWAYS the one that gets the looks. Thats what its about

(For the record I prefer mine )

Because that £20k is usually done at £50 a week, and they can't get a big loan while living with mum and working in Sainsburys stacking shelves.(Appologies for the generalisation) I have to admit to having a wide-wheeled Anglia and driving like a total pr1ck (ocasionaly)when I was 16, but I got there in the end so there IS hope. Give them a break, don't you think they'd rather drive an Enzo than a Corsa? Martin.

That's actually a totally standard car, externally. Some special edition (Triple 8 or 888 IIRC).

Anyhoo. Maxxers are just like us, but a bit younger and less experienced (sweeping generalisation, I know ). It's a shame they have a reputation for gluing cr@p all over basic family runarounds, listening to deafening music and driving like tw@ts. I think the majority have their hearts in the right places, but circumstances force their sights a bit lower that the average PH-er.

That said, you can pick up a plethora of decent cars for £1k-£2k, so there really is no justifcation for trying to make a Scrote 1.1 Popular look like (but not go like) an EsCos for the same £1k-£2k.

When done well, driven responsibly etc, I take my hat off to them. Sadly it's the to$$ers who seem to get the majority maligned. On the other hand you might say similar things about BMW or Porsche drivers.

As this worthless govt. emphasises, but seems to fail to implement

'Education, education, education'

There's hope for Maxxers yet.

have to say, in my experience i have found maxxers to mostly be total knobs(both people i have met and the way they drive on the road) who arent really into cars at all. on the other hand you get the ones who are proper car nuts usually driving the more expensive cars like the 200sx's and newer hot hatches. sadly though it seems more of them live up to the stereotype than dont.....

I have an army of these so called enthusiasts turn up at the bodyshop by my work. They talk about loving their cars etc. and you could almost believe it, right until the moment they start them from cold and rag the shit out of them doing stupid stuff like seeing how fast they can go in reverse etc.

All they seem to do is hang around car parks in retail parks, generally in the middle of the night when there's no one else about, and prat about in their 'chariots', as long as they're not climbing over my back fence and burgling my house I don't give a stuff what they do!

Have seen several tv programmes about them esp. around these parts, I can see why they are sometimes moved on, I think the sensible thing to do is give them somewhere to move on to (a bit like skateboarders) accomodate their chosen hobby rather than trying to ban it.

Better they're into cars than getting pi55ed up and scrapping in the town centre! The kids are alright, just a bit lacking in the good taste dept.

Its got to be better than mugging grannies & I spose with all those blinging bulbs & alloys it must be good for other countries GDP's.

However our local Chav's tend to drive up the ass of my old Volvo like it's magnetic or something. I'm waiting for the day when we get to test the reactions of kevin & crashworthyness of Chav's front splitter on Volvo's towbar

And me. It's not the cars that distinguish between enthusiast and to55er, it's the behaviour of the driver. and like so many other situations, it's a small minority that give the rest a bad name.

I've always 'modded' my cars, but all my mods are functional: engine, brakes and suspension, and I believe they make the car safer. I change my oil every 6k, never thrash it when cold, but I will drive fast where conditions allow. So you might put me in the same category as Kev who's only interested in how wide a tyre he can get on his rims and not scrape his arches but I'm nothing like him.

I'm in a car club (www.mk2cav.com) which has lots of different members. Some of whom can't understand why you'd want to change one thing and others, who think it's a good idea to fit a Calibra Turbo Engine to a mk2 cav convertible with 18's. I can see both sides, but what I hate is 'IN YOUR FACE BAD TASTE' like the 1.0 Corsa above.

I'm gradually (at about a tenner a week - don't tell the wife) making changes to my 1.8 Sri Saloon, and have waiting to go on (in my allotment shed) Oil Cooler, New Uprated Shocks (not lowering it), and bigger later brakes (from a mk3 SRi- they are more progressive and more reliable).

I also have the following BOY Racer Items

1) Large Bore rear box - I know it will just make more noise and won't go any faster, but it only cost £5 and it's new.
2) Calibre Bumpers - I've got an option on these are was planning to remove the horrid plastic trim down the side of the car, and spray them in anthacite, to go with the bottom half of the silver car.

Also: If I can get a Leather Astra GTE steering wheel cheap enough I'd quite like one.

And the Mod I'm looking forward to is when my tyres need replacing. I'm getting some decent one's, all the same make.

The worrying thing is my kids call me boy racer dad.
