Alternative DLSR lenses.... Canon EOS....

Well after my bargain, the supplied lens (EF-S 18-55mm) AF option died on me last week. Apparently a pretty common occurrence.

So, I've been looking at alternatives - I don't know enough about equivalent lenses yet to warrant spending loads.

I've found an older EF 38-76mm...... any good?

What other budget lenses are there?

Need AF option, just because Wifey uses the camera in full auto mode.

Suggestions? Anybody got some lenses for sale ?

For a cheap but decent walkabout lens, I'd be looking at a Tamron 17-50 (f/2.8).

If your going to buy a lens that isn't made by Canon, I would look at some reviews first. Canon lenses aren't all amazing, but they have a base level of quality, and tamron does not. Do not get me wrong, Tamron has some decent lenses, but they also have some crap lenses.

Just keep in mind; ca, distortion, and sharpness (and optical stabilization)are all factors on how the lens will perform within its range. When it comes to comfort features, you can look for things like AF, build quality, focus/zoom ring locations, zoom's effect on focus, non rotating front elements, and other features.
Just consider what you do with the lens, and try to get the best lens that fits your needs/budget. Does that make sense?

Any reason not to just pick up another 18-55mm? They are about £50 second hand and there are always masses for sale

3rd party lenses can be decent. The tamron 17-50/2.8 is great, the VC version OK. Both have rough autofocus though.

Sigma make a 17-50f2.8 and an OS version which is decent but not cheap. Also make a nice 17-70

Have a look for the canon 18-135 STM (not the old version) its a decent lens and good range.

I have just upgraded a few items and have the Tamron 17-50 lens for sale if you wish it's the non VC one.

it's a great lens, nice and sharp and of course a f2.8, a bit noisy to focus over the new STM canon lens but at the price you can have it for nothing will touch it.
comes with box and lens cap etc. owned from new .

I use a sigma 18-250 lense with auto fucus, and image stabilsing... a great all round lense ... which I use in lieu of my stock lense

Ordered a replacement for £85 (can't say where but you can find it on the net) so there's always that option. Amazing how much the prices very.

I've used two of these lenses for a few years now, and they are genuinely good, and good vfm - very sharp, quick-enough focusing for a landscape lens, well-controlled vignetting/distortion, but a little more fragile than Canon lenses.

Swapped 18mths ago with my Dad's copy as it was newer (he bought it off my recommendation, then upgraded as he's a gadget-hound!) and my frontispiece had come loose (quite common, easy fix we later discovered on the web).

So if you're spending ~£150 on a short-length walkabout lens, that would be top of my list.
