Replacing speakers in a 1996 993

Does anybody have experience of replacing the standard 3 component speakers in the doors of a 993 ? I am looking to improve sound quality and fit something relatively high end. Morel component speakers have been mentioned by one installer.

If anyone has experience and knows the sizes it would be very helpful. Same goes for the rear speakers - I know they are 4 x 6 but it would be good to hear what fits under the standard grills.

Do you have the hifi option with the big door enclosures ?

I've swapped speakers in both of my previous 993s, one with hifi and the other without.

From memory, JL audio used to make a 6" speaker that fit perfectly into the factory speaker location in the non-hifi cars. I out them in and made a noticeable difference. Otherwise I think you are limited to 5.25" speakers in the lower section of the doors. Generally a good idea to put in components with cross-overs, but happy to hear other views.

I think some people have gone to town by beefing up the area around the door where the speakers are installed (with dynamat?) to help reduce vibration.

Out of interest, which head-unit do you have ?

I need to do this so interested also. The rears I have been reliably informed are simples to replace, 4 screws behind the rear seats and the whole thing moves forward to get at the speakers. Gert sell the OE upgraded ones that fit the original holes.

Thanks for that info. The car has the following factory options (sorry, this would have been useful information earlier on !):

M490 - Sound package
M680 - Digital sound package

It has the Nokia Digital Sound Processing unit in the dirvers door pocket - I'm sure it's responsible for some of the poor sound quality !

Head unit is a Becker Grand Prix 7992 which I am keen to retain.

Yup, I had the same in my C4S... The DSP is garbage (IMHO) but better to leave it all there and just bypass the amp. Fom memory it is all rubbish made by Nokia.

Let me dig out the things I used and will respond in more detail later.

Just replaced my Becker with another 'Becker', just love the look. Replaced the front and back speakers with Harman Kardon, perfect fit and sound.
