China Town restaurant

I'm taking my sons to the British Museum on saturday and wanted to have a Chinese meal in China Town, however I have never had a decent meal there. So can anyone recommend a decent place to eat?

Won Kei, 41-43 Wardour St, London W1D 6PY. Great food and very funny place. They will sit you at any old table maybe with other people already on it ! Throw you the menu and say 'what do you want!'. Lively atmosphere and makes a change from the usual. Don't expect good customer service but a fast service and a good price

I think, in all seriousness, you have answered your own question there. Hygiene is also a significant and well-documented problem with restaurants in that area.

I can't think of anywhere off the top of my head but from where you'll be there are bound to be better locations to be found.

Whats the food like, price etc

Looks like a nice course BTW, Whats it called?. I played The west course at Wentworth last saturday which I have to say wasn't worth the £180 green fee!! (Lucky I got it for free )

Really good place, but book otherwise you'll be waiting forever for a table. You have to knock on the door to get in, and then they lock it behind you! Make sure you get the dumplings with soup in.

Seconded - Food is excellent, very fresh, none of the buffet rot. I think the authenticity is supported by the fact that it is packed on a Sunday with Orientals.

They do not accept payment by card

If it's busy and a large party (notably Chinese) want a whole table, expect to be moved mid-meal to somewhere else!

I've been going there since I was a kid. It's a proper restaurant with nice big tables. Never had any issues with service or quality of food - Dim Sum is very good. The new/popular one seems to be Wan Chai Corner which is also very good.

Wong Keis is ok, but not a patch on it's old self - though as much to the present lack of abuse. I go to the Joy King Lau round the corner in Leicester Street - the diners are mainly Chinese and I know that the BBC (British Born Chinese) group used to meet (and for all I know still do) there.

Having said that, if you want a decent Chinese, don't go to China Town ....

If you want dim sum (might be a fun lunch to share around), get down Plum Valley. It's quite smart inside compared to most of Chinatown but that's not reflected in the dim sum prices!

Dreadful tourist trap chinese famous for rude staff (why do people go to restaurants to enjoy rude staff!?)

Leong legends is decent. Bar Shu and Bar Shan on the other side of Shaftsbury Avenue are good too (Szechuan -very spicy).

As has been said, there is a fair amount of pretty bad Chinese food in Chinatown, with all the good stuff tucked away on Chinese language menus.

Train from Sunningdale to Waterloo, so not going via victoria.


Thanks for the heads up chaps, I believe an American Berger joint has opened near Covent garden so if I can find out what its called we may head there instead. Don't fancy eating ste in Chine Town TBH
