Speed humps and potholes.... my thoughts...
Discussion
I have thought this many, many times when crawling over outrageous speed humps in my cars, but why are councils allowed to build new speed humps when their roads are littered with potholes?
The materials used to construct said humps could, in many cases, be used to fill the holes littering our roads instead. This rubbish about not having enough budget to cover the costs of repairs just doesn't wash with me.
Now obviously, there will always be new potholes appearing on our roads and it would be unreasonable to demand they are 100% pothole free all of the time, but surely there should be some kind of minimum standard that must be adhered to before the materials and money that could be repairing our roads are instead used to obstruct them?
It really galls me that this goes on, as you can probably tell. The worst offenders being those humps that seem to be very badly constructed and end up having a pothole or dip right in front of them. Grrrrr!!!

Last week in Dusseldorf the cycle paths were better kept than our roads. On the roads they seem to have this weird thing where the 'minimum standard' is a flat surface that doesn't tear your car to pieces. It'll never catch on.The potholes develop in front of the humps as a result of the weight transfer of vehicles friving off the humps. On one road near me, the idiots have resurfaced the road and the humps, leaving the humps at least a centimetre higher than before, so I cannot get down the road now without the humps touching my car underside.

Doh!!
Best bit is when you drive down an unfamiliar road in the dark and the white arrows have worn off the bumps and not been replaced.....
I have to navigate a series of them in Halifax every day at the moment and must crawl ver them at sub 10mph, much to the chagrin of those behind me. Unfortunately for them, I am simply not prepared to torture and risk damage to my suspension.
If they don't like me going slowly over them, then in my mind they should write to their council about the humps slowing traffic too much.
The limit there is 30mph. Just the thought of what driving over them at 30mph would do to my car makes me cringe.

I don't know a single speed hump in North London that you can drive over at 30 mph, even in an X5 (unless you have no mechanical sympathy whatsoever).
Don't even get me started on 6.6" (generous assessment) width restrictions, which would better be called alloy wheel scrapers. I've managed to get myself to a state of mind in which I can ignore horn-sounding taxi drivers when I drive through these at 1 mph, with my head out of the window, maintaining a less than one inch gap on my side to ensure I have just over an inch of scrape-free safety on the other. As for the width restrictions that go round corners, I just find another route. There's simply no way to get through unscathed.
These are just a bad joke:

Near us we have those small square speed bumps. Too bad they are exactly 10mm narrower than a transit vans track width so they are able to tear down the road at mach 6.8.
Not to mention they put them at the wrong end of the road. Instead of putting them at the end that is a wide straight road and everyone has drives/garages to park on they put them on the end where with the narrow twistier road where everybody parks on the street already so you couldn't speed anyway. That's if the council decided you can park infront of your own house because they decided to make some of the speed bumps into a right of way 1 at a time pisstake and then to top it off they put two sets of speedbumps about 40yards away from each other! The £490 a year fee I pay should fix the potholes rather than spring up more speedbumps.
THIS!? WTF IS THIS!? http://imageshack.us/scaled/landing/191/sy4a.png
Still, I'm sure the residents are over the moon I have to stop and accelerate a noisy Impreza every 40 yards on the way home from a 10pm shift.
I believe someone in the council needs a jolly good talking to about all this because this just isn't cricket.

I have encountered those before during London visits. I wasn't a fan. Don't even get me started on 6.6" (generous assessment) width restrictions, which would better be called alloy wheel scrapers. As for the thing above with the two sets of humps, WTF?
