Slithery autumnal lanes beckon; the Fiesta ST is the perfect tool for the job

Do you ever choose your route according to what car you happen to be in? Now obviously not everyone gets to be as promiscuous in their car hopping as a jobbing car hack but my commute basically presents two choices: sit on the M25 and trundle along or take to the lanes. The dark, bumpy, narrow and often slithery lanes. Both routes converge at junction 17 and, by the time I'm done, both take pretty much the same amount of time to arrive at that point. So there's no time advantage either way.

Which I take pretty much depends on the car I have. So if I'm in the 4 Series it's joining the M25 crowd, trickling along and listening to Radio 4. The Beemer is in its comfort zone here and though time consuming I can dial out the stress and trundle in peace and quiet.

Today though I've had got my long overdue first go with the Fiesta ST. And that's a car with 'lanes' written all over it. A country lad at heart, I'm more inclined to barrelling along rural roads in a hot hatch than I am mixing it with the grown-ups on the M25.

It's not a route for flash cars though - if the bramble infested pinch points don't scratch your paint the potholes will do for your wheels. Circumstances dictated I had to drive the GT3 back along these roads one dark night the other week and, frankly, it was horrible. I know we've had a video of GT3s rallying and, incongruous as they look, 911s can get down and dirty on roads like this. But I was practically gnawing at the Alcantara wheel I was so nervy and hated every moment.

So if my only choice of route to work was along roads like this I'd be more than happy with the Fiesta. It's just so up for it and exploitable. I probably didn't top much more than 40mph this morning but I had so much fun. Like many recent Fords you sit a tad too high in the Fiesta than you might have initially liked but that's actually quite handy when you're picking lines and avoiding potholes and though the ride's not shy in this context it adds to the excitement. The steering is great too, Ford proving once again it that mainstream cars like Fiestas needn't have dumbed down controls to appease the mass audience. I realise I'm a little behind the curve in my ST epiphany but having read all the glowing reports over the past few months it's great to discover the hype is to be believed.

And in a couple of days we're going to take it to a bloke called Dave in Essex to make it go even faster. Full story on this in due course but even out of the box I'm a fan.

This is one of the very few sub-£20k cars that I'm not "meh" about. Seriously thinking of buying one next year.

Heard great things about this car, would love to give one a go!

Love tight twisty roads, even in the Autumn. Although they do require a fair amount more concentration.

Why are you sorry it has to be a mini everytime, are you somehow chained to the car like a prisoner?

I find MINI's are rubbish for backroad blasts on broken roads. Far far too stiff especially with run flats.
You spend too much time jumping sideways to enjoy the drive

Impreza/Evo. I ain't playing the Subaru vs Bushi game, but either will be more fun when slippery. And safer

And faster...

And better looking....

The exact 'predicament' I face every morning and evening. 9 miles down the tight twisty b-roads or 14 miles down the M55.

The Panda 100hp excels down the lanes so they normally win. Its tiny footprint allows you to make much more of the road than in bigger cars.

I listened to radio four the other week and they had an interesting discussion about organized crime that sounded like something out of grand theft auto 5.

I would like a go in a Fiesta ST; I had a fiesta as a hire car when I was in Jersey, and that was pretty fun despite being an automatic. Something about hatches and driving pleasure - I seek out the twisties on my way home from work a couple of times a week in my civic (with heavy metal on) but in my mrs BMW 120D it seems more suited to civilly scooting along motorways (with radio 2 on)

  • edited because I said "hot hatches" and realized nothing I;ve ever driven could be considered anything like a "hot hatch"

This unfortunately:

I've had mine for 4 months and loved every minute of it. Such a good car to drive, not necessarily the fastest car out there but so much fun to chuck around.

I had the Mountune MP215 kit fitted on mine which just adds that turn of pace to the car.

Brilliant fun!

There has been some really bad English recently in some of the reports - pedant I may be but...

"Ford proving once again it that mainstream cars like Fiestas.... "

"Today though I've had got my long overdue first go with the Fiesta ST....."

Smarten up chaps, my brain cannot handle this sort of English past about 2.30 in the afternoon. ;-)

"By redesigning the engine's water jacket they've reduced the volume of cooling liquid by FIVE times." either it is one fifth the volume or reduced by 80% you cannot reduce something by a multiple !

Tell me that isnt a run flat?

And they complain about harsh ride? How well will an ST handle on PS3 or Similar?

FFS. Also LOL at that alloy. I want to chop my BM in for this thing.

Nope not run flats, Bridgestone RE050a's are standard fitment.

I've thought about fitting stickier rubber on mine but that would defeat the object of it. It's all about having fun than outright pace with this car.

Never a fan of Bridgestone tyres, the sidewalls are as tough as hell. One of the worst tyres when it comes to mounting a tyre on a rim, they are almost as bad as run flats. This creates a very stiff ride.
