Jump Start help and Battery Brain

Hi All,
Please forgive this numpty type question but what is the correct way to jump start a car. I've never done it before and having returned from holiday the Griff has decided to punish me by flattening its battery. I have the Leven anderson connector fitted in the engine bay so access is easy (no scrabbling round in the passenger foortwell) but what is the best way to jump it. Scared of frying the ECU etc.
Secondly, prompted by this and no prospect of being able to access mains power anywhere near where the car lives, I'm tempted by a Battery Brain:

Make sure your 'slave vehicle's' engine is not running.
Connect positive lead to battery terminal, then negative.
Start engine on slave vehicle and run for 10 to 15 minutes (to get some charge into the 'dead' battery).
Stop slave vehicle's engine.
Start dead vehicle. Disconnect negative lead, then positive and take care they do not touch together!!!
Not a good idea to try a slave start with the slave vehicle's engine running as you can destroy the alternator's voltage regulator!!
My son had no power on his garage but bought a small solar panel to connect to his Tuscan (via the cigar lighter socket). Worked fine!!
Any device fitted to the battery which disconnects all the electrical circuits can cause havoc with your alarm system. And it's the alarm which caused the drain in the first place!!

I have thought about a solar trickle charger but because the car lives in a rented garage 'en bloc' (as estates agents are keen to describe them) I can't mount it anywhere.
Maybe less holidays and more driving is the order of the day.... Cheers.

I always go, Pos on to slave battery, then pos on to target car.Neg on to slave battery, then neg on to target car.
Reverse of that to finish
That way you don't end up with a pos & neg in different hands at the end. Unless that's what you meant & I misread it
