Anyone know if there is a legal requirement for the front no. plate surface to be flat and reflective?

The numbers must be in a certain font and a certain size etc. but why give scammers with lasers a nice flat surface to aim at?

lack of reflectivity does cut down the effcetive range but only if you have a dark non metallic car. Silver & shiny car? you may as well hold a big sign out of the sunroof saying nick me please.

I'd like to know which colour car get the most tickets, my guess it'd be silver.

As i understand it:

Reflective yes- is it that BS AU 142 or summat..?

Flat - no, but the angle of the plate has to show the "height" of the letters at a particular value from a distance. Think if you held a letter in fornt of you an dtilted it backwards the letter would "appear" to get shorter...

This is on the DVLA website i think.

Where do the plates have to be positioned?

I know most come from the factory screwed to the bumper section, is there a legal reason for it to remain there?

The plate has to be mounted as near virtical as possible. It also has to be made with a certain type of machine (a glorified mangle) if your car is registered after 2001. The trouble is it's only a £30 fine so a lot of people ignore it.

I do!

I don't wash my silver Audi anymore since collecting 3 points from Norfolk scameraship. I reckon they did get me from a very long distance away as I was caught doing 95, but I know I braked heavily as soon as I had noticed the van.
Needless to say, I have now installed exocet missiles.

I know of a PH'er who has his fixed to the underside of passenger side sun visor, handy when you need it.
