Well my Griff ("old smokey") has finally passed the MOT emmissions test after much tinkering with ignition leads and a new lamda sensor, but it seems like the root cause may be a worn cam (which would explain the suspicious ticking noise)
So...it seems like it's time for a cam upgrade
I've searched through the forums and found some good info. It seems that most people accompany a cam upgrade with a host of other mods. In the interests of trying to keep something of a lid on cost I would be very interested to hear what people consider are the essential extras for a cam upgrade. It would also be good to know which performance cam is the flavour of the month at the moment.
thanks in advance for any help peeps
Matt.

I'd stop driving it pronto and get to a good engine shop - I had ticking like that - tried to ignore for 100 odd miles before head told me to take it to the Austec - don't drive it home basically. Cut your losses and get it stripped asap - longer u run it more likely to be do the bearings and then BIG bucks.
Thanks for the replies guys. I know I'm re-treading old ground with this post but it's nice to get the latest thinking
jellison - don't worry, the car was already in the garage for it's MOT/24000mile service when the problem was diagnosed.
johno - I am leaning towards the MC1 as right now I can't really stretch to the full chip upgrade and RR sesh that the 404 seemingly requires. By all accounts the MC1 will run reasonably well out of the box, with the potential for some improvement if I decide to add the chip etc down the line.
Is there anyone out there who feels the 404 is runnable out of the box? Granted I wouldn't reap the full benefits, just want to guage the viability of upgrading in stages.......
