Tank slapper this morning
Discussion
First time it's ever happened to me.
In the EP3 going to work, came off a roundabout near Duxford then whoa! Car is going from side to side violently at about 30mph. thought I was going to fly into the barrier.
Diesel on the road perhaps? Proper freaked me out for a second there.
Be careful out there, kids.
Yeah, cool starry bra etc.

It would be useful to know if it is usually possible to take said roundabout at 30mph when it is wet/cold/damp or is diesel still the best excuse for someone who got carried away and nearly binned it?
Please.

Pretty sure I know the roundabout you are refering to now. I had a bit of a moment in my MX5 when it was dry, I was being a tit at the time but did not expect to lose grip like I did.
Always a bum-clencher when it happens unexpectedly.
I know of a slippery roundabout now and treat it as a play thing, but learning how to control a slide can only be a good thing. All I know now is that a Focus is a lot more neutral than an old French hatch with a torsion rear beam!

Only 'tank slapper' I had with the car heaving from oversteer to opposite oversteer (if you see what I mean) was on the A5 dual carriageway section round Shrewsbury in my Series 2 XJS.... Had our baby on board at the time so I wasn't doing anything daft, came off roundabout started to accelearate and very suddenly nearly lost it. My mate following in his 350Z was cruising and had no issue's whatsoever.
I can blame many things, the P600 tyres, a very poorly set up XJS suspension, diesel on the road.....but it was probably driver error.
Horrid feeling though

I don't know every single round about in the UK but I know plenty that cannot be taken at 30mph regardless of conditions. I also know that in cold and wet conditions grip levels are severely reduced and there are plenty of people who seem to be unaware of this and act all surprised or try and blame another variable for their mistake.
Over the next few weeks I wager we shall see plenty of these "I had a crash it was XYZ variable" threads.

Why has that upset you? Where did you say" I was driving around a round about that can normally be taken at 50mph yet today I suddenly lost traction whilst doing just 30mph"

Sorry, it was the 'carried away and nearly binned it' part the rolleyes was aimed at.I don't know every single round about in the UK but I know plenty that cannot be taken at 30mph regardless of conditions. Yes, I see your point, and it really was quite odd, just pootling along, going straight over the roundabout onto a two lane part of road and suddenly heading towards the barrier and having to saw at the wheel trying to correct its course that most freaked me out.
I've never known losing grip like that before, ever.
A tank slapper is an event where the handle bars rotate about the headstock, quickly and with great force, hitting either the tank or the lock stops on either side. This happens as you ride straight on. It is horrible.
If you werent riding a motorcycle then you didnt have a tank slapper.

Yeah, I know, but couldn't think of any other term to describe the instant lack of grip and going from side to side like that. If you werent riding a motorcycle then you didnt have a tank slapper.
