pulling out of offered job?

Hi

Bit of a dilemma.

I've accepted a job offer but only provisionally (in my eyes anyway) since my acceptance another offer has come up with a different company (which I applied for at the sametime) and would much rather. What's the form for rejecting said initial offer as the second offer is the much preferred one?

If not, just tell them something better has come up.

Decide what you would want to do if they offered you more money to still join them, as that might happen. Be prepared to negotiate or stick with a no.

Nice to know someone is not struggling on job market.

Just phone up HR manager and explain that the other job is so much what you want, but you are really grateful to have had their offer and you have agonised over the weekend, and wanted to thank them for all their time etc.

Why do you think it provisional?

The quicker that you talk with the "first" organisation - the fairer for all eg another candidate waiting eg internal memos/announcements circulated.



A salutary tale.... Turned an offer down from Twinings Tea after they submitted paperwork and it was not as agreed BUT gentlemanly about it. Few years later (10+) started work for ABF and after some months met one of the senior managers (ex GM of Twinings) who recognised me - he made my life hell.

This happened to me a good few years ago.

I was working as a sales manager for a local company and wanted a change,

I had an interview with 1 company on Monday and was offered the job on Monday night which I accepted on the
Phone.

Tuesday am I had a call from another company saying that they would like to see me on Wednesday to which I agreed .


In short ended up been offered both jobs , the first was a way out of my current employer and the second was my dream job.

I had to ring the MD of the first company and say that I had had a change of heart, he was not too pleased but I think he understood that I had been offered my dream job on a lot more money than he was able to offer.

My advice if you haven't signed a contract i would be make your mind up quickly, don't mess anyone about and pick the job that you really want.

I still have my dream job 11 yrs later although in a slightly different role.

What ever you do don't mess the first company round for too long their second or third choice may still be available. The other thing to remember is its a small world piss them about and upset someone and it could bite you in the arse in future.

So if the second job is better for a number of reasons, location, salary, better conditions, etc. you would still advocate that "upsetting someone" in the first job would be a major factor in deciding what job to take?

Happened to me. Accepted then declined. They tried to talk me out of it and nearly did as felt guilty but stuck to y guns and went or better job.

If you haven't started yet you could just not turn up! Better to call and explain though imho. They won't be happy but you have to look after #1 at the end of the day.

No I am suggesting it is a good idea not to piss them about, let them know as soon as you make the decision.

your post just seemed to focus on the negative aspects of the situation. Whilst your points do need to be considered, i just felt the positive aspects needed more emphasis.

Make sure you have a signed contract from Co.B before you turn down the offer of Co.A.

Nothing wrong with taking the job that's best for you, but be professional about it. Phone and explain, say thanks and let it go. Nothing they can do contractually, because you haven't actually started yet and no money has changed hands, They'll probably be pissed off, but they know it happens (or they should!) But, whatever you do, don't not tell the first company. Thats just bad form. And fking rude!

You definitely need to do what suits you, you don't owe either of them any favours.

But I am laughing at you calling one 'provisionally accepted'. I think we all know what the original post would have said if you only had 1 job offer, and this 'provisionally accepted' offer had been withdrawn by the employer
