Got two new boots for the TVR today via a popular online tyre supplier. Thing is the dot codes suggest the tyres were manufactured in 2011 having the age code of 1911. They are clearly un-used tyres but are two years old would this be generally considered acceptable or should I be sending them back and asking for 'new' ones?
The rubber surely deteriorates whether they are sitting on a shelf or are spinning around attached to your wheels. Life of a tyre is meant to 5 years isn't it, or is it less? So I think I would be rejecting them.
Having said that, my fronts are still originals, the car is 8 years old and 25k miles later. Rears were only replaced last year.

Shep,
besides the deterioration of rubber over time, which was explained in the ost above, i wouldn't accept older "new" tyres for the price of 2013-dot ones. On german tyre online platforms these older tyres are sold as "dot"-tyres for a reduced price. For me, this wouldn't be an option. You do not know how they were stored over the years. Storing position, moisture, UV and other factors can strongly influence aging of rubber material.
If they sold you the tyres "as new" without the declaration as "dot-type" tyres, i would ask for replacements.
[EDIT] I replace tyres after 5 years of age even if the thread is ok, or even more often if the tyre walls have cracks or are decolored in some way (mostly brownish through UV-rays)

I had this a couple of years ago. Unfortunately it looks like the manfacturers only do a production run of certain low volume specs and sizes every couple of years. I questioned it with the retailer and they said they would be fine. I bought a pair of R1Rs which were 2 years old when I bought them. They've been good as gold up to now, and I'll probably only get another summer out of them, so I'm not sure the rubber will go off before theyre replaced. A couple of decent track days towards the end of next years should see them off :0)
