My mother has purchased a vehicle that had a personal plate on it. After much waiting and faffing around (due to the dealer she purchased from not being helpful) she has finally got the registration document, had new plates made up and had the car MOT'd.

The tax disc expires at the end of December but of course has the old reg number on it. Obviously it will be an offence to be on the road with an incorrect disc, so what should she do? Apply now for a brand new tax disc and forsake the remaining two months or apply for it to be swapped which as far as I can tell will cost £25.00.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

They should have reissued the tax disc. I'd probably check online that it still shows up as taxed and carry on.

I have just checked on her behalf and it says vehicle status: unlicensed.

It does however say that if the vehicle has recently been relicensed that the record may not be up to date.

Could this be due to them reissuing a new disc?

If its a new to her car its probably best to just buy a new tax disc if one doesnt turn up soon. I would just buy a new one as 2 months tax. on most cars is less than £25 anyway.
