I'm 17 and just recently got my first year of driving out the way (you start at 16 on the isle of man) I've been using a POS ford ka for the last year, but really want something a bit more fun, im willing to spend about 5k on the car itself and would like to keep the insurance under 2k, I don't want anything that's really chavvy that people will see and think 'knob' I just want it for personal driving experience, quite fancy the boxy mr2s or an older Integra type R, although it doesn't have to be jap? Any suggestions?

Mx5. I've just bought one at the age of 19. Its my 11th car, and i haven't enjoyed any of them as much as this.

It costed me 480 pounds with a years mot too!

Although there isn't a bucket full of power, it is enough to get the back out when you want to, and thats with the open diff mine has!

Although i will be turbo'ing it soon, just because i want to see how cheaply i can do it myself, making up all the parts and buying a small turbo.

Have you heard of a thing called insurance? Unless it is ridiculously cheap on the IoM then you wont get insured.

MX5 - loads of fun for the money. Consider a 1.6 to keep insurance down.

You'll have to start running quotes for various cars because how much it costs depends a lot on

Where you live
What you do for a living
Loads of other personal factors.

I'm gonna say that insuring anything remotely sporty under £2K will be hard until you're 21 but I've no idea what the deal on the IOM is for insurance so...

Not sure the KA is a POS, sure its no sports car but it actually is a good drive, go kart like and direct power, not flyby wire

don't know how it compares on the isle of man, but in much of UK you can't get insurance on anything for under £2k at 17

When i was 17 i had a 1995 mini cooper spi and i only paid 700 quid fully comp in my own name. im 21 now and pay 520 for a 62 plate corsa and have a nova insured for ruffly the same. Not all youngsters get raped by insurance. Like above it all comes down to your details.

MG Midget. Safest 2-seat sports car for an inexperienced driver. It's only just got enough power to kill you.

Seriously though, buy a little sports car known for it's benign, predictable and forgiving handling above all else. A mid engined car or a lot of power is going to get you in to trouble much quicker than you can get yourself out of it. Once you've got a few years of all-weather driving behind you that'll change.

To that end, I'd recommend a 1.6litre MX-5 if you don't fancy a Midget.

I've driven a ka. It was diabolical.

That's pretty sound advice and the route I took when I first started at 18 . Sprite/Midget can teach you a lot . There was no MX5 in those days but at 21 I had a Lotus Elan which was another step on the ladder of learning how to drive .

I used to own one. Good fun until you try to stop, but having driven an old style one very recently it's a real step back from modern cars.

Having had one for a few days, I'm sure it's a POS (assuming that means piece of st)

There's no harm in learning about driving without power steering, servo assisted brakes and ABS though.

Call me old fashioned but if you learn to drive without relying on modern assistance then you'll be safe and competent. Anything you get thereafter in way of safety systems or assistance just adds extra layers of security.

Learning to drive (post driving test) whilst leaning on ABS, DSC, TC, servos etc is only going to lead to the firm belief that any car that won't flatter the instant flooring of the loud pedal on a 500bhp V8 in the wet is a lethal handful and therefore AWD and a rack of computers is necessary on our treacherous damp roads.

Never seen MG Midget and safest in the same sentence before, ok low powered and fun but all the safety of a pedal car.

MX5, or maybe a kit. Something like a locost or similar.

If you can get insured they are typically very cheap, simple and good to learn in - especially with an older tech engine such as a crossflow.

No need for much else really.

Would it be wrong to think that youngsters cant spell? Roughly**

Another vote for 1.6 MX5. I had a mk2 1.6 and it was alot of fun.. So much so that ive now got a mk3 2.0 sport.

Celica T sport? Its not strictly a 2 seater as its a 2+2 but its very fun and revs like a type R.
Its got 190bhp, so its no slouch. Cheap to insure for what it is too.

3k well get you a good one.

Failing that a MR2?

CRX VTEC - hatchback model rather than del-sol type model.

Were cheaper to insure than most others in their day but I imagine finding a rust free one could be difficult.
