Does it make a decent shed? As it looks like my BMW idea is being veto'd by her indoors due to potential high running costs associated with a cheap old Beemer (she may have a point) I am after alternative ideas for cheap family car sheds. Do these drive ok (strangely I like the styling!!) or would you lot recommend the better rated Mondeo Mk3 of the same era (looked at a 2 litre ghia the other day and it was a decent all rounder), or the wild car, I am also bidding on a 2001 Honda Accord Type V 2.3 manual on ebay!!

Should be very low down the list of potential purchases. PH factor in the negative, I always found them a very dull steer. For your money you can do a lot better, get yourself on the bargain basement thread pronto.

I liked my 2.5, and the 2.2 has better economy and a chain belt (A snapped belt 10K after a change killed mine frown)

I Also rather like the styling, and found it a good place to be for a long drive, it under-steered horribly though, especially if you put chap tyres on it, but I was only 17/18 when I had it.

+1. So I do. My shed is an 04 Mondeo. Surprisingly good fun to chuck about for such a big car. The Accord you mention sounds a much much better choice than the Vectra.

Are they pre-facelift? My mate and his wife had one each at one point but they both had suspension problems (one of the springs literally snapped in half whilst driving!)

Could be a vectra B or a C on a 2002.

If its a B then check for proof of cam chain renewal and the oil squirter which provides lubrication to the chain has been updated.

Fine daily drivers, Ive had several and all did what I wanted without much fuss. Allot of PH crew hate them but many have either had one poor one or just join in the hate for all things VX.

If its a C then the direct 2.2 (newer engine to whats in the B) was pretty poor and personally I would steer clear.

Its a late model B. Its £995, with a new MOT and 3 month warranty. I know they can be troublesome (cam chain issues or something?), but seems a fair amount of car for the money to me and surely by 2002 Vauxhall had ironed out most of the early Vectra problems?

Do yourself a favour and check the bargain basement thread. A whole world of interesting cars for under £1k, if the vectra was £200 then I'd say go for it but at that money it holds no appeal at all.

That seems like a lot of money for an eleven year old Vectra. Has to be a newer and/or more desirable shed available empty grand.

Like all the guys who get their tyres fitted for £5 a corner. By a mate.

They're at KwikFit giving it Billy BigBalls, same as these £200 cars they're buying.

Which shape is it?

The first or 2nd shape UK Vectra?

If it's a later one for a grand, that's a bargain. But a lot of people prefer the earlier cars.

The only problem for me, with the earlier car, is that they're mostly driven by unemployed cocksockets.

ETA: Just seen it's a Vectra B. Probably pretty reliable - but see the bit about driver demographics.

Despite the shoe'ing they get on here, I don't think there's much difference between a budget Mk3 Mondeo and a Vectra C. The Mk3 will be significantly better than a Vectra B though.

I'd say the running costs of a used BMW are greatly overstated, but caveat empetor and all that. In general, petrol BMWs are reliable and if you're looking at something the same age as an E46, parts are really not that expensive. With any car over a decade old it's always going to be about how the car was driven by previous owners and the most annoying problems will be little things like bad seals letting water into the boot etc. Otherwise I'd be looking for cars that have hopefully had suspension replaced and so on, so I don't have to.
