Unfortunately my old car cut-out as I was waiting to join a roundabout yesterday and I couldn't get it started again (recurring problem, now sorted I think). So I pushed it backwards out of the way half on the footpath half on the road... Not really blocking the road in any way but not a place where you would stop for any good reason if you know what I mean.
i had a warning triangle out a couple of metres behind the car and sat and waited for the tow truck. Of the couple of hundred cars that came by, no-one seemed to have any issue with my plight as I wasn't really in the way and my situation was fairly obvious.....but there's always one!

so as I'm sitting there, a driving school car pulls up along side and the instructor (on the passenger side) starts flayling about and nattering something at me all stary-eyed. So I turn on the ignition, put the window down and he says in a frustrated and accusatory tone " do your hazard warning lights not work?"

before I have a chance to react, his student driver, keen to get on, sees a gap in traffic and pins the accelerator suddenly. Norman Peeves is then pinned back in his seat and unable to insult my intelligence any further, as the car speeds off into the traffic.
....window up. Ignition off. Turns up pink Floyd , and giggles

Well, do your hazard warning lights not work?
Or they do but you decided not to have them on?

I find it mildly amusing when I see warning traingles a few metres behind a car.
I once saw one behind a car that had broken down in a car park. The triangle was literally an arms length from the rear bumper.

I'm surprised people dare to do stuff like that - how did he know the OP wasn't some psycho or chav who would get out of the car and knock seven bells out of him for being a smart-arsed, nosey, smug tt?

Just desserts= irony.
annoying person goes out of his way to pass inane judgement on unfortunate motorist, during which he is cut short by student driver under his own instruction.

Hazards lights.= fully functional but not in use. Not necessary due to big reflective triangle in the road and obviously broken down car in full, unmistakable view of all (reasonable) drivers. Also, I didn't want to listen to the tick-tock for an hour and a half while waiting for assistance. Plus, it would weaken the battery further adding to the cars' inability to start again.

I broke down on the M25 on a Friday afternoon, a corsa with a couple of chavs went slowly by (lots of traffic) giving me the coffee beans. They then had to stop about 5M away from me so I decided to wander over and ask what their problem was. The stared straight ahead pretending I wasn't there smile

tt, the warning triangle should be circa 45m behind the car and the car should still have it's hazards on, otherwise someone may think you are queueing or part of traffic rather than broken down

Thanks for the clarity.

For what its worth, I'm unsure if this thread will go the way you might have intended.

Or because he is being the big man about his warning triangle and justifying not putting his hazards on because it would annoy him. The thing is the warning triangle was too close by his own admission and without hazards on he isn't aiding visability or making it clear he is broken down rather than just stopped.

@engineer1.
You weren't there, the triangle was in its optimum position to warn drivers in the built up conditions geographically. 45m behind would have been lost in the urban sprawl and frankly one would have been a tt not to know I was broken down hazards on or not, and a flat battery would have caused more difficulty to all concerned once the truck arrived. So I did the best I could at the time, I'm sorry that my little story offends you.

From experience of st old cars that would randomly die, Hazards make it clearer than a triangle - I bet a load of drivers don't understand wha they are for. Also if an hour or so of having your hazards on would flatten the battery you have a problem (of course having the stereo on instead shows odd priorites)
