Bring the Noise!
Discussion
Wow!
Just fitted Swanny's old "half-sleeved" Chim exhaust, and what a difference..! (feck me Swanny, you weren't kidding about the volume! Are you sure it's only half-sleeved?
)
Bearing in mind that I have JE Engineering Y-piece with 100-cell sports cat (ie. cat still in place), the change is unbelievable...
It's not the volume per se, although it is *much* louder (!), but it's the depth of layered noises that you just couldn't hear before - now laid bare for all the world to hear!
To be fair, it does sound *slightly* tug-boat-like on idle, but get it over 1500rpm and that disappears, and you enter a world of aural delight!
You can almost hear each cylinder fire, and the make-up of the tone is so totally different from before - it now sounds like a new-style high-revving V8 rather than the rather anodyne muffled thumping that was all there was before.
The "sound" of the exhaust pulses is indescribable, and on overrun when it backfires it doesn't "bubble" like it used to - it "cracks" like a AJP Cerbera...
I still have to find out whether I have alienated all my neighbours - but this has opened my ears to the aural joy that the RV8 can produce, and I still haven't gone over 4k rpm yet!
I can say that this has 100% changed my view on upgrading the exhaust - just wish I had done it ages ago

Welcome to a mad world of noise.
On a different subject, you told me some time ago that booting your car hard was scary. Is that still correct? Have you ever had a full geo? A good friend of mine has just had his 360bhp Chim geo'd for the first time and says it is totally transformed, as mine was too.

Hi Anthony!
Yes, a wake-up call - in more ways than one!
I have the geo checked regularly, as I know it's so important for these cars...
The incident in question was shortly after I got the car, dropped 2 gears on a dual carriageway an hour after it had rained, and was suddenly facing the central reservation at 70mph at an angle of about 30 degrees off true...
Traumatic is one way to describe it...
I think it was only the fact I had been practising drifting-recovery at an airfield the week before that allowed me to recover it - with plenty of tank slapping, etc..!
I think the learner driver having his lesson in the lane next to me may have got the shock of his life
Still at the back of my mind every time I boot it...
But now - more cacophony without the revs
