Talking to some friends today.

And we were discussing the fact that you could build a Mini, without using any BL, Austin etc... parts.

This is due to the amount of aftermarket parts available, shells, subframes, engines etc...

Is there any other car this can be done with?

Probably a landrover.

Until relatively recently a lot of old BL stuff like MGBs and Spitfires you could buy heritage shells, but I think most are out of production now.

Old VW campervan, think they make old Beetle shells somewhere still too.

E type?

Does Martin Robey still make the body shells?

Definitely the defender. Although I'm not sure you can buy an aftermarket engine? You can buy everything else from the chassis up in non OE form

You can still buy reconditioned Landy Series 2.25 engines (although a V10 Touareg engine mated to Rangy diffs to make it permanent 4WD might be an interesting proposition). It would be pretty simple to build one from scratch in less than a week (there's a YouTube vid somewhere of a garage doing a strip and rebuild chassis swap in under 12 hours).

I'm pretty sure you could get everything you needed as 'new old stock' or reconditioned parts to build an MGB from scratch?

somewhere out there, there is an Elan Sprint still in its packing cases. Untouched. Un-built. Waiting to be found.

NOS or reconditioned doesn't count.

It has to be fully aftermarket.

BMH are still producing complete body shells for Mini (MK4/5 and Clubman), MG B (roadster, BGT) and Sprite / Midget.

Other than the shell, pretty much any Civic made between '92 and '00. Possibly earlier and later ones too.

Oh right, sorry for the infringement on the rules.

But - I still reckon that the aftermarket trade could supply enough for a new / remanufactured MGB?

As an aside, Im sure I read about a chap who'd built a Sierra Sapphire Cosworth from the ground up using new old stock a few years back?

If you could find a body, how about a Reliant Scimitar?
