Right guys I know this is similar to a previous thread of mine but it has finally come to a point where I need to decide which car to get.

I have been out test driving both. My thoughts are the accord is most likely going to be more reliable and cheaper to fix.and shouldn't need much work doing.

The Alfa might need work doing but that could just be me being paranoid.

Both types of cars I am looking at will be 100k plus mileage... So would both be the same in regards to maintenance?

The159 is a little more expensive but it's such a nicer car. I'm just stuck thinking which one will be better in the long run. Or even if it's worth me looking at the petrol version of the 159 if they are more reliable? I think the diesel and petrol ones are roughly the same in maintenance right?

Thanks in advance guys!

It's a heart v head thing. My mrs has an iDTEC Accord and it's superb. The 159 tugs my heartstrings every day (to the point I wish I'd bought one instead of the Giulietta).

Maintenance is key with the Alfa and there are plenty of guides on what to look for. To all intents they seem to shape up rather well all things considered. check out alfaworkshop and also alfaowner for any help. Accord is just supremely well engineered, and the gearbox alone is a delight. Either way you won't be disappointed IMHO and it'll be down to maintenance and condition.

My current smoker is a 159 1.9 JTDm SW and it's just cracked 170k miles. The exterior is chippy but the Leather interior and trim is in superb condition. Looking at the history it had a dual mass/clutch at 90k and after another 80k it still feels fine, it's had belts/water pump done every 50k miles or so. I've just replaced the rear calipers, a top arm and a broken road spring. All the electrics work fine, it averages 45mpg but I'm sure I could get it nearer to 50 with a lighter right foot, and it still performs as it should. There's a bit of juddering in a high gear under 2000rpm which is prob the EGR valve needing a clean but I can live with that. Overall it feels a well made product and still looks good. Wouldn't call it exciting to drive, more Audi than BMW but it looks better than either.

Sounds like 159's can have some gearbox issues:

That whole thread didn't make me want to rush out and buy a high mileage Alfa 159, I have to say. Boring Hondas get more appealing as the years go buy... wink
