Currently drive an E39 540i manual. It's great, comfortable yet fun when I want it to be. It's been good to me.

The V8 sound is very important to me...

but I'm tempted to get a car for commuting to work that will save the £s.

Commute is 12 miles each way.

Not sure if I want to sell the BM, but I am sure that I'll need to save money.

What car would you recommend? Keen to hear your favourites...

For the sake of a 12 mile commute is it worth running a second car, by the time you cost in purchase price, insurance, mot, tax general running costs, VS maybe a maximum gain of 20mpg - over your 1200mile (approx) yearly commute, if you gain an extra 20mpg you save about £400....nowhere near the running costs of a car, let alone buying one too.

If you do however use the car for 8k then you'll see about a £2500 saving in fuel...but for this i'd expect you'd never be using the 540.

As above, probably a negligible saving against running the 540i. A well looked-after E39 will manage the miles fine, 12miles should be enough to get it fully warmed each time.

I run a 5.0 V8 Merc CLS as my only car and have considered a cheap 2nd car, however my commute is 8.5 miles each way and it just doesn't make sense to incur the extra expense.

Cycle and keep the V8.
