Matching Canon Eos 400 lens

I have a 400D Canon which i am happily snapping away with whilst on an extended holiday. It came with a 18-55 standard lens but i need a bit more zoom. Now the camera is a little old so buying a new Canon lens might be a bit OTT so what about an independant lens manufacturer ?

Years ago i used Tamron lenses, are these still any good ? I need a 70-200 ish zoom to match an AF 400D.

Any recommendations ? As you'll probably realise i don't wish to spend a fortune nor upgrade my camera to the latest version !!

Canon 15-85 is the next step up.

ETA: Sorry, thought you were looking to replace the 18-55 with something a bit longer, 55-250 as suggested below is the one you want.

The Canon 55-250mm IS II tends to get better reviewed than the Tamron 70-300mm. Not much in it price wise either last time I looked.

The Canon 70-200mm f4L really is amazing value, and can be picked up for £300-£350 second hand if you're willing to go that route.

I have a Tamron 55-200 to go with my EOS 400D. Nothing special but it's pretty good value for money at £100 and takes decent pictures when you need a bit of zoom, it's also not much bigger than than the kit lens for transporting around. If I want a better quality shot of something I use my 50mm prime lens and walk closer to the subject!

Well I've been trying to buy this Canon zoom for the last couple of days
I'm currently in Singapore so thought I could get a deal, think I'd get it same/cheaper at home !!
You spend ages haggling, the price changes 15 times in 15 minutes and all sorts of extras get added in even though you haven't asked for them !!

Its so bloody annoying !! Looks like a very neat/compact lens though.

Really? What sort of prices. I ended up buying one from John Lewis for £199 as it happened to be in stock. I'm very happy with the lens so far - at the wide end anyway.

Just had a 55-250 IS 2 delivered for the wife. Cost was £89.99 inc UPS delivery from Pixel Deals on E-Bay. I'm more used to L-Series for myself but this looks like a decent bit of kit at a silly price, hard to believe it has IS built in at that level.
