Hi all.

I was just wondering if there was a way that i could find out from certain garages in my area some information about their fuel.

Eg.

Which sells the most.
How often are the tanks re filled

Basically i had my car on the dyno the other day and it i was recording some 8 degrees of knock retard, it would seem that the petrol was to blame.

I use shell ultimate at my local garage but it could be that this fuel doesn't get used that much here and could potentially be sitting around for a while.

Bit of a long shot but just wondered if there was anyway of finding out such information?

TIA

I doubt you'll get that kind of information anywhere however keeping an eye on how often the price changes might give you some indication - if they are very fast to lower/raise prices (at the same rate the supermarkets do) they're getting regular deliveries since they won't usually change the price until they've sold the fuel they've already paid a higher/lower price for.

Although you cannot ruel out poor fuel, I did notice that your engine is modified with cam, headers, re-map ect. If the mapper has only adjusted for fuel and let the ECU adaptations take care of ignition advance, you could end up with a minus on the long term ignition trim.

You got proof of that?

Fuel has an extremely low margin - why would they lower the price and remove that margin ?

I used to work for a petrol station, we would get deliveries of around 30k litres every other day for normal petrol and diesel.

And super probably once a week.

You won't find a database with what stations sell, but choose a busy one and they will be getting deliveries at least every other day.

Maybe for the smaller owner garages, but the big guys base there prices mainly on competition.

So i spoke to my local garage today and asked him about the fuel there.

He told me that the V-power doesn't really get consumed as much as normal fuel there and at times would get refilled once a month.

This could explain the old fuel.

I asked him about the ones further down the road near the motorway and he said they might only be sitting in the tanks for a maximum of a week.

Think that's where i will be refuelling the 'ro from now on.

Glad i asked the question.

Shell SUL fuels certainly go off. I think that your dyno man was spot on with his diagnosis.

Optimax/V-Power is probably best, but you must choose a high turnover petrol station, otherwise its money wasted and possibly worse...
