Might seem like a feeble-ish one but would appreciate a steer here.

I'm 53, and reasonably physically fit (although I don't train much, but I'm always active, working on bits outside, walk the dog every day, etc). Over the weekend I set about replacing some fence posts which snapped in the storm, which involved breaking out a LOT of concrete, digging holes, carrying heavy bags around, etc. I worked for about 7 hours, ate a couple of cheese & ham wraps halfway, had some Tunnocks bars, drank water & coffee. Possibly could have/should have drunk more.

When I had finished I was an utter physical wreck. I don't just mean "wow that was hard work", I mean I didn't know whether I was coming or going, I felt weak, I felt sick, I was in a complete state. Ate something and fell asleep on the sofa. Woke up couple of hours later and I was shivery and still nauseous. Went to the lav 3 times in 12 hours although it was solid. Ate some glucose tabs and took Dioralyte on the basis that it might help restore my levels.

Today I find myself aching all over (to be expected I'm sure) plus still feeling nauseous at times. I feel sick, I eat something, then I feel more sick a bit later. But I'm also completely spent. I walked the dog as usual at lunchtime and halfway through the walk I honestly thought I might collapse. Had to stop for a while, managed to get back to the car (we drive to "interesting" places to walk), went to the nearest petrol station and ate a sausage roll & drank Lucozade Sport. This afternoon I have eaten another wrap with cheese & ham, plus some chocolate brownies. I alternate between hunger and feeling sick.

I guess the bottom line is that I have drained myself out of all the good stuff. My questions are, (a) am I correct, and (b) how best to address this? Do I need carbs? sugar? low GI stuff? Or what?

I'm sure some will mock my office-boy physical condition but I really could do with some pointers here, I've never been like this before.

TIA.

Go see a GP to be sure but that sounds like borderline heart attack - many symptoms listed.

How is your fitness normally? Was your skin pale?

Feeling worn out is one thing. Feeling like you have been feeling is another. See the Doc tomorrow. And one other thing: you made no mention of having eaten anything other than ste: what's your diet like?

Heart attack is scary. Generally my fitness is fine, BP checked fairly regularly and altho slightly high, GP said nothing to worry about. I dropped 2 st about 2 years ago and have maintained that.

Diet - well mostly I eat fairly well, tend to keep the carbs low-ish to watch the weight (don't eat bread for example) but I mostly eat reasonably healthy stuff. Today after the walk incident I just ate what I could get my hands on but that's not usual. Breakfast - fruit, granola, bio yoghurt, lunch, salad with cold meat and/or a wrap, and a normal meal in the eve. I do have to watch a sweet tooth which I succumb to in fits and starts but I think I manage that.

I have has campylobacter in the past and get gastric issues about once a year but haven't related that to this really.

I just thought I'd overdone it......

No, unfortunately I don't have a thermometer. Must get one. Any particular reason at this point?

I do feel a fair bit better today. Thought about getting a GP appt but apart from still being a little tired, I feel physically a lot better today.

If your temp had been normal it would rule out fever, touch of 'flu etc. I think you've just had a bit of a bug is all.

seeing the doc is the main thing and you must still do so no matter how much better you think you are. Personally im going to be abit more optimistic and say you massively over did it with how much you lifted, for how etc and probably were in the process of coming down with a cold

if your not used to heavy lifting etc then you gave your muscles a 7 hour battering, ask anyone who trains and the big compound lifts like squads and deadlifts can make you feel light headed and sick. when i first trained i used to suffer really badly as all the blood rushes from your stomach to your legs and i know of people who have been physically sick due to this, getting home from a session and i was always whacked and would have a lie down before i could think of eating

now if i cast myself back to then and did 7 hours of hard lifting im sure i would be a state! then if i was also coming down with something i would be done in well and truly(i have trained with a cold before, sometimes its fine but sometimes it just does not happen)

Im sure any heart issues and you would be doing well to do 45 minutes of what you did..ok im no doctor anything and your symptoms are extreme but im sure its nothing as serious as that smile

did you push yourself harder because you were being helped/someone was nagging you?
