Hi, looking for a good reasonably unmolested 450 chimaera to replace a Triumph Stag which is now sold. Looking forward to an exciting upgrade whilst remaining British and having the correct number of cylinders!!

I guess not the best time of year to buy and sell, but if anyone is thinking of parting with their 450 Chim I would be pleased to look. Friend of mine on PH was brave enough to hand over his keys for an hour to let me have a good drive....converted!!

Have now looked at and driven quite a few examples but choice seems to be very limited at the moment and most are dealers asking top money.

Great forum, have picked up lots of useful information.

Cheers Pete

Thanks for the reply, yes have kept my eye on the classifieds, hoping to tease out some more examples to look at. There were quite a lot available earlier in the year. Cheers Pete

Hi Peter, a good decision you have made there. I ran the two in parallel for a couple of years and don't regret the final choice of car at all. Not sure what you liked the most from the Stag, but don't rule out a good 400 would be my advice!

You mean they are not all front wheel drive? Man, I thought the back end was a bit loose on my test drive...

Rich, sorry mate your car is not for me.....same rule as girlfriends/wifes...its just not done.

Was sorry to see the Stag go, nice revvy engine and that fantastic V8 soundtrack, so I think a Chim is probably the natural successor. Need to get something in the garage before the wife spots the oppertunity to park her car there!!

For entertainment value, this is how I did my annual maintenance underneath, should be useful with the Chim I hope.

Yes I have been looking at 4.0 and the odd 5.0 as well, so will keep an open mind.

Ok explain the tipping the car on it's side trick. I only have my phone and the pic/ screen quality is poor.

would be hilarious to do it , then get the Mrs to go in the garage,, what the hell !! biggrin

Drain engine oil, seal brake and clutch resevoirs, consider draining petrol tank depending on which side and what you are going to be doing.

Jack up car, remove wheels on one side, attach rockers to wheel studs.

Front wheel off on other side, attach jacking mechanism powered by leccy drill.

Take a deep breath and wind the car onto its side.

There has been various discussions about strain on bushes and suspension components, but my feeling is if they are not up to supporting the cars weight, you are going to be in trouble pushing into a fast bend.

Can't help feeling annual chassis inspection, clean and treatment is going to be so much nicer if its something you do yourself.

I have seen quite a few, albeit temporarily, front wheel drive examples. For that second or so before the rear of the car impacts with the hedge/ditch, the car becomes front wheel drive IIRC. laugh
If you go to look at that one, check for bits of hawthorn up the exhaust pipe.....

4.0, 4.3, 4.5, 5.0 and bigger.....

All lovely, all give good performance, smaller engines give much better fuel economy and are cheaper to buy, buy on condition and history rather than price.
Chassis condition is important, as new outriggers are a common requirement, especially on the later cars, and won't give you much change from £2000.

After that it depends on what you want to do with the car. The 4.5 is a lot of people's choice because it has 40 more bhp over the 4.0 and the 5 litre engines have a reputation for being more fragile - TVR didn't cross bolt them, or internally balance them. If it's a Sunday cruiser, brisk B road driver, then get a nicely sorted 4 litre. If you plan on doing track days then look at the modified bigger engine versions.

Above all else, have fun and join in - you get the 5,000 free friends regardless of which TVR you buy clap

I've had two Stags in the past, beautiful cars and a pity BL cocked it up. Often wondered how it may have developed given a chance scratchchin
