Oil pressure gauge not reading

Just been in my car and found that the oil pressure gauge is not reading at all - the needle does not move. Was out in the car a few days ago and all was working fine reading is usually around 40psi. I have checked the dispstick and all is well, the required amount of oil is in the sump.

Anybody got any ideas? is it a duff oil sensor or a duff gauge?

Having oil in the sump does not mean you have oil pressure.
If the warning light has not come on and you can see oil in the rocker cover when looking down the filler neck, it will be the connection to the sender or the sender itself at fault.
Usually it is a corroded connector.

Could be a wiring fault or duff sensor, my first guess would be damaged wiring down by the sensor (on top of the oil filter housing, low down at the front offside of the engine).

However, there's a small chance that you actually don't have any oil pressure in which case you can do a lot of damage if you keep running the engine. This could be from a stuck pressure relief valve, or some other failure in the oil pump. If you have an oil pressure warning light, and it behaves as normal (comes on when you switch the ignition on, goes out when you start the engine) then you might choose to assume the oil supply is OK and look for problems with the sensor/gauge/wiring.

The oil pressure light on the dash is working normally, comes on when you first switch on then goes out once the engine is running.

The most common reason for this problem is the failure of the oil pressure sender. They cost around £50 from a TVR dealership and are easy to fit.

It was the sensor was is faulty..buying a new one on Thursday and fitting it.

Hope you have a bit more luck than me, it took a box full of sensors to find the correct one to match the calibration of my gauge, big to joolz for finding one
