HMRC/RM Charge
Discussion
Yes, it's another one for the importers and exporters
bought a chrome cover about the size of a match box from the good ol' US of A
the item was $30 or £18 if you will.
Anyway I expected to get it within two weeks and low and behold this morning get a nice letter from RM
asking for a custom fee of £11.75, which includes £8 Royal Mail handling fee ( this item is the size of a match box)
I know it's not going to bankrupt me but the thing that is that it clearly states on HMRC website that if the fee is less than £9 than it will not be charged
The fee was £4.75, and then RM put an £8 fee on it.
Any loopholes in the RM basket would help

Try not to use a supplier who sends with USPS as it ends up with RM who will already have the gloves on & be lubing up to get you. DHL or Fed Ex are generally better. You should only pay duty/VAT on goods over certain value http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/customs/tax-and-duty.htm#1 although this includes the value of the shipping. HTH
If they didnt pay HMR&C for you, they you would need to employ a customs agent and send a cheque to The Man yourself. Only when they had acknowledged payment could you then receive your parcel.
I disagree about USPS & RM too, because theyre less likely to see this as a revenue stream than many carriers and their charge is a good deal lower than many too. UPS and FedEx both charge more, as far as I am aware.
In my experience, you have a far better chance of getting soemthing in under the radar via the Royal Mail, than any courier and if you are assessed, youll pay a lower fee for their dealing with it for you.
When you consider the cost and trouble that it saves you, and look at the alternatives, Im not sure what people expect.

Continuing an old thread..........
Border Force have admitted it was their error in a VAT overcharge on tail light finishes I bought from far east.
Good.....they have offered to repay the £18 overcharge
but they have refused refunding the £8 RM handling fee and modest out of pocket expenses

Question:
Have Border Force and RM followed guidelines on refunding this handling charge?
Lasly, Border Force have it on record that NO e-mail communications with the public due to their inbox regularly becoming full !
It would appear there are too many complaints from the public.

If this arrives in e mail format, BE VERY CAREFUL how you reply . I've not been expecting nor ever get any stuff from USA, but I've had a few e mails from RM/HMRC/UKBA about parcels with outstanding duty, and purporting to come from UK addresses. Checking the header info ,they all originate from outside UK.
