Your local Post Office will be able to do this for you while you wait, it takes the same amount of time as renewing your tax disc; you won't need any special paperwork, just the V5C, MOT and insurance.

I was under the impression that this had to be done at a DVLA office as the taxation class of the vehicle has to be changed from disabled to PLG.

I think you re-catorgise the vehicle at the same time as you do a keeper change and apply for a tax disc. It needs to be done @ the DVLA instructions are on the V5 I think.

The current owner will want this to happen asap because they won't be allowed a tax free status on the new car untill it's done.

Sorry but disabled car tax is new to me?

So if a driver is disabled this makes the car more 'green'

I think the idea is perhaps to assist those less fortunate and pre-dates the green veneer that was applied to Vehicle Excise Duty, that said in the current climate I am surprised it has not been means tested. Though it follows that a disability can remove or have an impact on ones ability to earn for onesself or needing to support a disabled person it doesnt always mean a disabled person doesnt have other means or earn huge amounts. I know someone who is very very wealthy yet has a blue badge and free VED, in reality to actually assess and charge based on means would cost way more than it ever recovers and in the scheme of things it isnt a big deal.

It has been possible to change the taxation class of a vehicle at a Post Office since June this year. Before that, it was DVLA only.

People who have the ability to have free VED don't actually have to use it. So your example of the bloke who is very very wealthy using it is doing so through choice.

What would I rather have? Free /disabled tax on my R/Rover or to be able to walk more than 50 yards without pain? The free tax helps me with reduced earning power.....
