Pro-Laser Errornous readings
Discussion
Question for you bib's out there
I gather this device is often used as a handheld unit carried in trafpol cars. Quick question how often do you get errornous readings?
I happen to own one of these for speedo calibration purposes
& on the weekend whilst out testing I got two speed readings off of some white lining (this I have found is a good relective surface for getting range readings from)
I managed to get a speed reading from two white lines, one moving at 4mph & one at 7mph !
I have also noticed that if you point it at a nearby traffic cone's 3M reflective bit you can also get a range reading of several hundred feet despite it being only 10ft away.

Aren't these the units outlawed in the states because they read a court wall at 10-16 MPH!
Think so - or something very like it.
It's an interesting story actually.
And as pointed out, these things don't measure speed. They can't. They measure distance (very quickly) and compute speed (well, how else could you measure speed?), so any movement of the gun or target patch during this affects the reading........
....not that a court will care.

never happened......
If it's not moving...the callibrated, speed checked, range checked pro laser that I use at work has never caused any problems...
If it's not sure or there might be obstructions...it simply wont read anything...
Try waggling it at some white lines next time your out.....
Think about the poor truckie who is being done for 53 in a 40, despite his tacho confirming speed as 40.39 mph. Reason, the laser device was probably swept from trailer front to cab front, thus increasing the apparent distance travelled. Any movement from the original aim point will give false readings.

so of course, we can trust ALL plod to be honest & have full integrity????? yeah.. why don't I feel happy with this. I'm sure the guys who post on here are good sorts, but the rest aren't anywhere near so nice.

Lets face it, any copper that sits in the back of a van pointing laser guns at people is a bit of a tosser and really rather sad....... Makes ya wonder why they bothered joining up...oops crimefighters..i forgot.
"It's all about the money.....it's all about the dum, dum, duby dum dum...It's all about the money.."
Most BiB aren't rich enough to turn down £150 in overtime, for sitting 6 hours in the back of the van...
That's my view anyway...

principle : noun
"A rule or standard, especially of good behavior: a man of principle.
The collectivity of moral or ethical standards or judgments: a decision based on principle rather than expediency. "
In that case...In addition to the money aspect of doing my job...I also enjoy dealing with selfish drivers who put their thrills and own importance above the safety of others..
After all, if I don't like what I'm doing...I should
off and do another job....but I do like what I do...so I continue..... >> Edited by Streetcop on Tuesday 9th November 10:27
