Hi all,

Recently moved to Hampshire and will be commuting to the city tomorrow. Taking a train is not an option so I am looking to drive to an underground station then tube to the city.

I used to live in Suffolk and did a similar cummute (Drive to Wanstead, park, tube etc.. Does anyone do anything similar from Hampshire?

Hi Bisonhead,

When I drive into town from Hampshire I generally either:

  • Take the M3-M25-M4 to Ealing Common, dump the car on the Common (de-restricted, although I'm not sure how early you're planning to be there?) and take the District Line in (Zone 3).
  • Take the M3 and A316 to Twickenham - I have an off-street parking spot here, but there's a relatively cheap multi-storey next to the station, and it's just off the motorway. Zone 5 on the mainline straight into Waterloo.
I'm fairly sure there's also some de-restricted parking around Kew Gardens (District, Zone 4), or at least there was a couple of years ago.

If you're prepared to come in from further out there's plenty of de-restricted parking around the Ruislip area - take the Met Line straight into Aldgate.

If coming up M3 park and get fast train from Twickenham, to waterloo (15 mins).
If coming up A3 park and get a fast train from Surbiton, to Waterloo (15 mins).

Both train stations have big car park at around £10 per day and waterloo return is going to be around £10 out of peak times or £15 if before 930.

Why isn't the train an option? I'm not sure where in Hants you're coming from, but there are plenty of fast services into Waterloo, and the Waterloo & City Line will take you straight to Bank.

Unless you're leaving stupidly early (aiming to be approaching London before 6am) the M3 will clog up in myriad places, not to mention the incessant horror of the M25.

Train isnt an option because I am a tight-arsed Jock. Also, I have a works oyster card and get my petrol paid that works out at slightly more than a train ticket wink

I commute the M3 between 0800 and 0900 at the moment and it is slightly busy. I work just off the junction with the A30 so it isnt too bad.

I'd go straight up the A3, park for free on the street at New Malden and get the train from there.

Dump the wheels in the work car park and take the train in from Staines or Ashford?

A Zones 1-6 peak travelcard is £16.40, although both stations above are from outside Zone 6 so will be slightly more expensive.

Although if you have a works Oyster Card, this will cover you for free (I'd imagine?) from any station inside Z6?

Very good point, It is in Z6 (Hatton Cross) so may well do.

No brainer, free (if lengthy) cattle-wagon commute to the City.

I always use Hounslow West. It's on the Piccadilly line.
Tube car park is £5 per day, free at weekends.
