VW Bora TDI PD130 - gearbox whine

Hi guys,

Just wondering whether anyone could shed some light on my recent gearbox whine. It is only audible under the following conditions:

• Idle, Neutral, clutch out
• In gear, clutch in, but rolling
• In gear, under load

The whine is comparable to that of a VCR rewinding. I've checked for leaks and have checked the oil level and all seems to be ok. My initial thoughts may be lay shaft bearing or possible clutch release bearing?

Any comments appreciated.

Is it a 6-speed?

If it is then it is possibly the pinion bearings. Very common on VAG 6-speed gearboxes from that era and not cheap I'm afraid.

Yes, 6 speed.
