Hi, Mrs V8 has been recently diagnosed with Cystinuria - a very rare kidney problem that means she is to prone rapidly forming, very hard kidney stones made of Cystine. The only drugs available have awful side effects and the stones therefore have to be removed surgically - the last two were 4mm and 10mm but the first one discovered was 17mm.

Preventative treatment is mostly about drinking very large amounts of water - idea is to flush the crystals out before they form stones, and managing the PH level of the pee - however the amino acid that is not being processed correctly is Methionine and if I understand correctly, reducing her intake of this will reduce the incidence of the stones....

So the question is, does anyone out there in PH land know anything about foods low in Methionine?

Fruit, veg and legumes (beans) basically.

It's an essential amino acid. On a quick read, amongst many other functions, it forms part of the RNA transcription enzyme, so if you had none, your cells wouldn't be able to do the things they are there to do - make proteins.

Another nail in the coffin of a veggie diet methinks...
