Hi, I am newbie to piston heads and I doubt my car is a top end sports job but its in great condition and its paid for. I have a 2009 VW Passat (2.0L 175bhp 6 Speed) but the bog standard factory fit gear knob has become a bit disheveled and I know its sounds a bit pimpy but I wish to replace it with an illuminated one, (a) anyone know where I can get one other than the one I saw on eBay (B) a reputable body styling place that could fit it for me (near NE31 Newcastle/South Tyneside) as it dont looks all that straightforward. Must know what they are doing

It is straightforward, do it yourself. Even if for some reason you can't, I don't think this is the sort of thing you need a 'reputable bodyshop' for, I'd trust any old bod just to change my gear stick knob.

hmm, I'm not unwilling to try but I tried lifting the gater up (eventually) but that was a task in itself as there is a chrome surround keeping it in place which was a bit sod and there'll be a wire too "illuminate" the illuminating bit on the top, presumably it will get a feed from the cigar lighter. underneath it looks like it was clamped in place by a machine press. VW quoted my left arm, half my house and my mum as ransom, so I'd rather have someone who knows what they are doing. (other than taking out a bank loan for a VW Dealership)

As for cars and me: I know how to drive it but what makes it tick is an enigma to me tumbleweed
