Hi folks, celebrating my big four O at the weekend in Scarborough with the family, can you recommend a top notch fish and chip restaurant please, hopefully on the seafront?
Regards Craig

I'm yet to find decent fish and chips in Scarboro.

It's a hole I'm afraid.

But there is a good italian (as in really good) and a good restaurant that is a greekish sort of theme.

Giannis and George Michaels.

Unfortunately the best answer is to take the A171 upto Whitby and then take your pick! Luckily enough the A171 takes you over the North York Moors which is nice!

Yup! get into Whitby, and queue up at the Magpie on Pier road, you won't regret it...

This is at 11:30am it gets busy, but..........

It's totally worth the wait...

Magpie is overrated and overpriced IMO. Plenty of good chippies in both Whitby and Scarbados though.

Change location and go to Whitby as others have said. If you can't be bothered queuing at the Magpie (especially if its raining) walk on towards the pier/beach. Just after the lifeboat museum the road that leads up to the top of the cliff is called Khyber Pass (I kid you not).
On the right, and with the best view from a fish and chip restaurant, is The Fisherman's Wife (formerly Hudsons). Its so big you will always get a seat and usually by the window.

But,

If you do go to Scarborough, this is the highest rated fish and chip restaurant on Tripadvisor:

Enjoy the day where ever you go!

Well in 8 years of going to Whitby i've yet to find one that is any better, and believe me I have tried, they serve over 1000 people
per day in season, and as you know Yorkshire-ists are notoriously fussy, it wouldn't be anywhere near as successful if it wasn't any good.

Whilst i'm sure you'll find people that knock the Magpie the overwhelming view that for a lover of Fish & Chips it's one of the
better places to visit....

Definitely off to Scarborough, used to stay in the grand as a kid so fancy a bit of Scarborough nostalgia for my 40th. However, not staying in the grand as I suspect its a complete dive now. Staying in the royal instead although not getting my hopes up about that either but for 84 quid b&b for 4 of us there must be a bit of value there. It looks to me as though all the Scarborough hotels are stuck in a time warp so we,re just gonna pretend its the 1930,s. I think we,all give that harbour view a shot
Cheers

Trenchers in Whitby is as good as the Magpie and the queuing and sharing a table the magpie likes to practice is not an issue. I lived in Whitby for a good few years and most locals go no where near the magpie for those reasons.

Just outside Scarborough on the A64 just off the roundabout where you'd turn left for Filey theres a really good place. Really very good, but not in town. Harpers I think it's called, same guys as wetwang, home of the summer Fish & Chip runs.

Thats understating it some what, its being living off its past glory for far too long, a bit like the rest of the town...

Went to Maggies a few weeks ago it went straight in the bin it was rank for some reason as on a previous visit it was ok, you could try Harry Ramsden's in Scarborough, but as said the best is Wetwang or the A64.

Filey again

There is a place on the junction of Station Road and Belle Vue road.

Large portions of good fish.

Licenced too

In Scarborough avoid Harry Ramsdens on the seafront - offers what is just about a child`s portion at a high price. We always go to Leeds Fisheries which is on the main road
down from town to the beach on RHS - sort of triangle shaped & painted white. You can go upstairs & have a sit downer if you feel
posh for the day.

The town has a bit of a depressing air about it so I`d spend most of the time near the sea - get an open top bus up to the North bay & have a walk around the park.

Top off the chips with a visit to Alonzi`s:

& have a knickerbocker glory.
Have a lovely time & watch out for speed cameras on dual carriageway S of York & between the Jinnah restaurant & Malton!

I think Trenchers is far superior to the Magpie.

Find Trenchers a bit greasy at times. Prefer Riverside Fisheries on East Whitby, but no restaurant, so you have to fight the seagulls and eat them at the bandstand hehe

Julian, top tips, thanks, like the look of that alonzis for a knickerbocker glory, kids especially will love it. I'm from Cleethorpes so I'm under no illusions about what a rundown seaside resort can be like. Still looking forward to it.
